Yes but would it be so special if it was the norm?
The novelty would wear off after you've subscribed so you may as well donate as and when you like.

Writing off all premier features is a bit incendiary but I think without care it could alienate people

How about this.

Add a donations button on to the forum. Once the required amount of money to run the forum is donated, the desired features get put in place on this forum. This can be an annual thing or it could all just happen at once.

I'm totally against the VIP perks etc cos I can see it now

The site I donate on just has the word Donater under the username,we get nothing more than none donators but we like the site so much the donations are not a problem,its a quick paypal button.

now because of the irrational illogical and baseless arguments given by people who oppose the feature the emphasis is on the donations aspect and not the premium features

I swear if this happens and all we get is a coloured username I will be pissed

If we can reach a monthly/yearly quota the WHOLE forum gets the perks.

You should find out how to create a forum and then just make one yourself You have all these ideas for the forum and most of them don't get put in place. You could test them on your site and then use it as 'evidence' to get them implemented on here.
