The BBC has received 100,000 complaints from members of the public over its coverage of the Duke of Edinburgh's death, according to the Sun newspaper.

The corporation cleared its schedules to cover the news when Prince Philip died on Friday, at the age of 99.

EastEnders and the MasterChef final were replaced by news programmes, while BBC Four was taken off air completely.

The BBC said: "We are proud of our coverage and the role we play during moments of national significance."

However, it declined to confirm the number of complaints it received.

The figures are due to be included in the broadcaster's fortnightly complaints bulletin on Thursday.

A figure of 100,000 would make the coverage of Prince Philip's death the most complained-about piece of programming in BBC history.

Other programmes that attracted a high volume of correspondence included the broadcast of Jerry Springer: The Opera, which received 63,000 complaints in 2005; and Russell Brand's prank call to actor Andrew Sachs, which drew 42,000 complaints in 2008.

The BBC was not alone in adjusting its schedule to reflect Prince Philip's death, with ITV and Channel 4 both broadcasting extended news coverage.

However, many viewers turned away as the day wore on, with ITV's Friday night audience declining by 60% in comparison to the previous week, according to overnight figures.

BBC One's audience also dropped six per cent week-on-week, while BBC Two lost two-thirds of its audience, with just 340,000 people tuning in at any time between 7pm and 11pm.

The most-watched programme on a single channel on Friday night was Channel 4's Gogglebox, with 4.2 million viewers.

On Saturday, the BBC put a dedicated form on its website to allow viewers to complain about the TV coverage, in recognition of the volume of complaints.

The form was removed on Sunday, after the number of complaints began to fall, the corporation said.

...I read that earlier, bots...it’s over 110,000 complaints now ...tbh, I rarely watch regular TV anyway so I hadn’t realised any extent of coverage... maybe it’s been more as well because COvID has restricted the funeral...from what has always been said of Philip’s ‘no fuss’ type mindset, he would probably be saying, oh put Eastenders back on and let’s see what the Slater gals are up to...

Imagine being criticised for how you grieve for your grandfather .

Well, it's incorrect to say "no one" isn't it?

Harry was accused of being cold by various people.

People grieve how they will, it's their grief, not ours. It's gross to judge someone grieving the loss of a loved one just because you happen not to like them.

Also, they are under no obligation to illustrate their grief in its entirety in a public statement. It's their grief, not for your consumption, no matter who they are.

Yup, a person's grief is not entertainment for the masses. Their lives and their pain is not a soap for us to partake in from a safe distance

Don't we have a thread on here that is deemed 'entertainment' where people guess when people are going to die? those people that die have families and grieve, is their family grief also not a soap for us to ignore their pain ,so we can enjoy a very weird game at a safe distance.

Then report the thread?

Although your attempt at connecting that to what Dezzy said doesn't work. The thread has nothing to do with making a soap or entertainment of the loved ones grief who are also not likely to see the thread.

Actively going onto national TV or into national newspapers telling the world someone's statement about their own grandfather wasn't good enough, as though to quantify their grief is a completely different thing.

And that has absolutely jack **** to do with anything. There's a difference between guessing who will die in the coming year and literally judging someone for how they are grieving their grandfather's death one or two days after it happened.

I don't understand the complete mental gymnastics a person would need to compare the two and act like they are the same thing. Guessing who is going to die is not inherently a malicious act, a person doesn't play that game and be like 'gee whiz! I hope this person dies!' but attacking someone for grieving the loss of a loved one will always be a malicious act.

That's absolutely disgusting, you'd have to be twisted to take part in a game like that about real people if that is what they were doing.

Anyone who thinks that is twisted while they are bashing someone for not grieving the way they want them to lacks self awareness to a serious degree.

Nobody did that.
Of course playing a game of guessing when real people will die is twisted.

It's a disgusting cruel and downright nasty game that shows the depths TIBB has fallen to.

A lot of people are taking the opportunity to attack peoples opinions in a thread about someone dying.

That's tragic.
