No because that would discriminate against those who use oil or other means to heat their homes, given they want people to move away from gas this would be a strange move!

The gas prices crisis isn't about your literal gas supply arista; electricity prices are also massively hiked because so much of our grid power generation relies on natural gas. Arguably that's the much bigger problem. No one actually needs a gas supply at all. Scottish islands (and much of the highlands) don't even have mains gas, for example.

My sister (an island-dweller) has her electricity on one of those prepay key things. I wonder what happens then? Do they just lump £400 onto the balance? lol
TBH I doubt she uses £400 of electricity in an entire year... she lives alone and works 50 hour weeks, and when she has leave etc. from work she's usually over on the mainland at my dad's. She basically needs enough electricity for a few hours of telly and a cup of tea in the evening. She doesn't even use the electric heating as she has an open fire and gets logs on the cheap. I reckon it'll pay most of her entire year
.Not that I'm jealous, she lives alone in the middle of nowhere, I get creeped out at her house even when I'm there with the whole family... ... she lives there alone ... all through the dark winter and everything ...

I'd love to live on an island to be fair - but I'd want to be in or at least NEAR one of the little villages. Her cottage has literally nothing around it for a couple of miles in both directions. Maybe I'm just a wimp . It is gorgeous on a nice sunny afternoon but on a windy pitch black evening in the middle of winter? what if there's MONSTERS??

For anyone interested, i managed to get a fixed rate for electricity that is £20 a month more than i am currently paying on the standard tariff. A couple of months ago it was 2-3 times what i am currently paying

that's with EDF, and its fixed for a couple of years. Electricity prices may well be on their way down, but I dont believe for a moment they will approach 2021 prices for a long time, if ever, and they could go back up again.
If I consider that i'm getting £400 from the government in October, it makes it pretty compelling |

an anecdotal update on this. Changing to the new tariff triggered a review on my direct debit payment and the upshot is that i am now paying £30 a month less than I was on the standard tariff
![]() I think i've been using marginally less electricity since the price hike but not enough to equate to £30 a month My only explanation is that they over estimated my usage by quite a large margin when they bumped up the price

UK energy suppliers have been told to review the way they charge customers by direct debit amid complaints about soaring charges and credit balances.
The regulator Ofgem also urged six suppliers to take "immediate" action to tackle issues with their charging processes. Some 500,000 households saw direct debit payments double this year, Ofgem said, despite prices rising by 54%. It wants suppliers to check whether such a large increase was justified. The six suppliers singled out included Ecotricity, Good Energy, Green Energy UK, Utilita Energy, TruEnergy and UK Energy Incubator Hub (which has now ceased trading). Ofgem found they had "moderate to severe" weaknesses, ranging from inadequate charging processes to lacking a structured approach to setting direct debits. The watchdog has now ordered all energy suppliers to review the accounts of customers whose direct debit was doubled or more between February and the end of April. Where appropriate, Ofgem said it expected suppliers to adjust any miscalculations, including making repayments if needed, and consider whether a goodwill payment is warranted. "Suppliers must do all they can, especially during the current gas crisis, to support customers and to recognise the significant worry and concern increased direct debits can cause," said Jonathan Brearley, Ofgem's chief executive. "We know there is some excellent service out there, but we want to make sure that it's consistent and standard across the board. It's clear from today's findings on direct debits that there are areas of the market where customers are simply not getting the service they need and rightly expect in these very difficult times." British Gas, EDF, Scottish Power and SO Energy were given a clean bill of health. Bulb, E.ON, Octopus Energy, Outfox the Market, Ovo, Shell and Utility Warehouse were found to have some minor issues. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62148487 |

Octopus tried to double ours, I wouldn't call it a minor issue
