The trouble with international law is that so much is open to interpretation. Putin's war is an illegal war. We're into year 4 of that particular invasion. I guess the difference there is that Ukraine hasn't been involved somewhere in almost every terrorist act of recent years and Iran has.

The way I see it, the biggest difference is that Ukraine was actually invaded. People can dislike Iran’s behaviour around the world for all sorts of reasons, but they didn’t try to annex a neighbour. That distinction matters in any discussion about how these situations unfolded and why the international response looks so different.

it depends on so many things. Trumps administration are throwing out a series of justifications, hoping one sticks, but the rules based international law is no more. None of the 3 super powers give a toss about international law. In that circumstance, countries have a far smaller margin for pointing fingers at tyrants. They have no teeth.

However, congress have basically voted to give the ok to the iran war, so Trump now has all the justification he needs
