Err No, it's a game, like Darts is, like Chess is, i love Darts don't like Snooker much now, it use to be full of characters like Taylor and Stevens, and the boozy Alex Higgins.
My rule of thumb, If you can wear shoes then it's not a Sport, add golf to the list of Games as well.

Shoes, as in I'm just off to the office Dear, Have you seen my Shoes
Football Boots Tennis = Trainers Cricket, erm, i'm not sure but they are not the type of shoe i had in mind. Hungry Hippo is a game yes, yes how very sarcastic you made that connection, but i will say that Hungry Hippo is a Child's game, also a recreational game, also non professional. These are the things that seperate Snooker and Hungry Hippo, not the title of Sport or Game. I have a second rule of thumb, If your heart rate does not increase substantially whilst playing then it's not a sport. What activity breaks that rule which you would wish to call a sport?

Bowls, Archery, Shooting, are Professional Pass times................. Ok i am joking. Yep your right, Rule of Thumb Broken But where are you drawing the line, do you consider Tidlywinks a Sport? I draw the Line at a competition including Athletic Activity, and no Shoes.

Ok i will stop prattling on and simply ask of the Forum Is Conckers a Sport? Is Croquet a Sport? Is Cherards a Sport? What definition defines a Sport? Because if it is not Athleticism then Sport is going to become a Pointless description for me

Chess & Snooker for instance. Sure, they both require great mental thinking but pretty much zero physical strain but one is always on telly, is always played in front of crowds, has some very well known figures, officialy endorsed console games and pretty much operates like a sport from the ground up and is received as a sport because it is transmitted as a sport, public perception wise. Ergo Snooker is a sport, Chess is not. Mind you like Chess, Snooker can also be seen as a recreational 'game'. Two drunk goons in the backroom of a pub are not competing in a major sporting event. Ronnie O'Sullivan, however, is. Last edited by Stu; 12-02-2010 at 02:57 PM. |

It is not Common Sense to define such things by current trend, and public perception.
in the 60s and 70s Chess was tellevised, and competition today is in front of large crowds. Chess was a Sport then but now it is not now? There was a brief period in the 90's when Garry Kasperov was beaten by Deep Blue(a computer) Chess became very popular again, did Chess suddenly contain more "Sporting" content? I dont think Sport should have a changeable Definition. I think it is fixed. A celebrity can lose the Celebrity tag when they become unpopular, but i don't think Sport can be treated that way. Even the Dictionary definitions of Sport are confused on this matter so public perception and trends will hold the majority view i guess. But if memory serves Snooker has been finding it hard to get revenue's for Prizes, Top Players needing to get jobs to pay the bills, it may soon fall the way of Chess, by your thinking it is losing it's "Sportiness"

Not with Barry Hearn taking charge this year. He saved Darts, so hopefully he can do some good for Snooker.
Snooker has been finding it hard to get revenues for some time now since it became illegal for them to use tobacco companies as sponsers - who traditionally would have sponsered the big tournaments. The game has two primary problems : Not enough characters - people pay to see Ronnie, but that's about it - and the new generation of sports fan just dosn't have the attention span to absorb what a great game it can be. If television as a whole is going down the toilet in favour of the internet due to the short attention span of youth, Snooker - a pedantic and calculating game at the best of times - was clearly always going to suffer. |

Yep, i'd agree there Judas. Although Snooker delivers a spectacle of Skill to viewers, once you know what can be expected of a top Snooker player, the attraction faids. Excitement is squeezed into a few moments at the end of a close game, or when safety shots are at there best.
If you contrast the Atmoshere of a Darts game to a Snooker game, there is the problem Cricket developed 1 day 50 over's cricket for this very reason, and Chess developed Speed Chess also. Hard to say how Snooker could evolve a faster, more exiting version of itself. But i would love to see it.

Is tiddlywinks a sport or pastime? Is golf a sport or pastime? Is texas holdem as sport or pastime?
Not everybody can just do these things and even those who do have to practice 70 hours a week to be really good at it. Is it a physical ability - snooker is certainly not. Is golf? emmmm? Is high jump a physical ability or ability to use a different stick than golfers or snooker players? Answer my questions |
