People are far to eager to throw the word 'racist' around nowadays! It was nothing of the sort!!!

For anyone who didn't get the bleeped word, Rachael was talking about the so-called banana boat, the term used for the way black people originally got to the UK. Used to be derogatory, now dropped into obscurity. Hence the mystified comments :-)

Know your history....'straight off the banana boat' is a reference to people coming to the UK from the Caribbean. It was used mostly by other Caribbean people to describe the newly arrived as they had little idea how to dress for the British weather or in the fashion of the time.
It was the cheapest way to get to the UK to come with the cargoes of bananas ...on the banana boats.

OP. So what you are saying is Rachel was racist towards herself and her ancestory? And she should be offended by her own comments?

I used to here the the term banana boat all the time when I was a bit younger. Still do form time to time. It was always used in reference to a persons stupidity or intelligence.

I get it. But since she's half where I'm from, I don;t take offense
If it was a full Caucasian person that said that... xD I didn't take offense to Emily's comment either, it was a joke. Stupid Big Brother.

What is derogatory about that statement? and black people (or non white people to be accurate as she is kind of beige) cant be racist about themselves since many call each other the n word - so they cant have it both ways |

I'm Irish and in the 1950's and 60's people coming from Ireland to UK via Hollyhead or Liverpool used to say they had come on the 'cattle boat.' So Rachel would have been describing what many elderly Black would have described without it being a race issue.

She might not have meant in that way, I'm mixed race no where near as dark as her (jealous) & I don't think she'd have meant it in an offensive way.
