I was exactly the same - always approach the over-vaunted with a hint of apprehension - but I really, really liked it. But his second book, I can't think of the name of it - was much, much better - excellent, in fact. Will have to try and find the title..............

THAT'S it! I thought that was an extremely powerful examination of the life of (some, obviously) women living in strict Muslim society. Fascinating stuff. And I love that he's a 'native'. We get lots of books written by western observers and excellent translations, but a writer from this society writing in English is very appealling to me.
