At present the one that sticks in my mind is The Memory Keepers Daughter by Kim Edwards

Quote:
This stunning novel begins on a winter night in 1964, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins.
His son, born first, is perfectly healthy, but the doctor immediately recognizes that his daughter has Down syndrome. For motives he tells himself are good, he makes a split-second decision that will haunt all their lives forever. He asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the baby away to an institution. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child as her own. Compulsively readable and deeply moving, The Memory Keeper's Daughter is a brilliantly crafted story of parallel lives, familial secrets, and the redemptive power of love.

The best books I have read that make me use my imagination when reading are Stephen King's 'Dark Tower Collection (There are 7 books).

Not his usual style of horror writing, it follows the journey of a 'Gunslinger' Roland.

Quote:
Roland's quest is to find the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to be the nexus of all universes. Roland's world is said to have "moved on", and it appears to be coming apart at the seams. Mighty nations have been torn apart by war, entire cities and regions vanish without a trace and time does not flow in an orderly fashion. Even the sun sometimes rises in the north and sets in the east. As the series opens, Roland's motives, goals and age are unclear, though later installments shed light on these mysteries.

I could explain it better but I'm so tired at the moment.

OMG! I have just found out he is writing an 8th book for Dark Tower.

This makes me very happy as he said the 7th would be the last and that was 7 years ago.

I had chat/debate atwork tonight re Martina Cole..

Bloke said he would never ever read another one of her books as it was verging on depravation/porn.. Said they are completely woman's books and was quite disgusted by them! (he usually reads the exact same books as me)

Actually, that reminds me Josy, did you hear/read the book by Dave Pelzers brother (I think it was?). Basically his own account saying all Dave wrote was crap and their family was never that way and Dave wasn't mistreated? It struck me as wanting in on his success and bitterness

Yeah, I would say her books are more for women, they don't verge on porn imo but they are a bit gritty sometimes, I love them

I don't know. Half of those 'Bad childhood books' were just to cash in on the popularity of the times. It seems that everybody had a bad childhood and wrote about it.

I believe some of them did have these harsh childhoods, but so many are complete fabrications.

True. Loads came out all at once. They're still popping up to pull at the heart. But I'm not one to say if it's truth or not. Who can really?

I heard he was writing a book, but not what it was about, after reading the 3 by Dave Pelzer, I would think his brother was talking crap, surely you couldnt make up the kind of stuff that Dave wrote about.

You'd be suprised what some writers can come up with.

Not that I'm questioning David Pelzer, but others that have written similar stuff to him.

I loved Anne Rices Vampire Chronicles when I was younger. I also loved the last book I read Fever of the Bone by Val McDermit
