This checkout worker was probably not having a good day and this lady's rudeness pushed her over the edge. She should not have refused to serve the customer but the customer could have waited a few minutes to make her call.It is very disrespectful to the checkout worker imo.

Mobile phone reception areas should be more selective so certain areas become receptionless

I work in retail and I would say 80% + of customers are complete pricks. I used to actually like people before I started my job. Still the best way to deal with rude people is just try get on with it and not make a fuss, it is really not worth it in the end. In most retail businesses they put the customer before the employee no matter who's at fault

Nope. The lady on the phone is the idiot. It's just rude. I once kicked somebody out of the juicebar I ran because they were on the phone, I asked them to take their call outside and they got pissy, but sorry, not everyone wants to hear your call and especially if someone is trying to serve you, it's just plain ignorance and bad manners.

It is rude when someone expects to receive tip top service yet they don't have the decency to give you their full attention as they're on the phone. However, I do think the Sainsbury's operative went a bit too far with this.

I would simply scan faster, like my life depended on it and then NOT pack....afterall, you cannot make the obligatory offer to bag pack if the person is on the phone

My mum would do the same I think as she gets really annoyed when shes serving and someone is on the phone. I mean fair enough if she answered the phone mid queue but she could ask to ring back but if she deliberitaly rung someone in the queue that's just rude.

What about when you are checking out and the cashier is chatting with her co-workers and completely ignoring you? I've had that happen many times and it's equally as rude. imho.

Sounds like the Sainsbury's employee went on a power trip. Their job is to put items through the till and take a payment; conversation isn't necessary beyond "do you have a Nectar card?", "do you need a hand with packing bags?" and "cash or card?" Of course it's rude to be on the phone when you're dealing with another person; but "the customer is always right" and there was no need to do this... or for this to become national news... sounds like the customer was an asshole, kicked up a fuss (how else did this become news?) and I'd imagine most of us would have done the same as the employee, but it was still inappropriate to do that.

No of course you don't have to interact with the shop worker, and of course Sainburys will back the customer, they are not going to do a Ratners are they???

It all comes down to common courtesy and a little bit of respect for your fellow human beings.

I feel like it would be like a waiter coming over to your table and telling you it's rude to put your elbows on the table and he won't give you your food until you take your elbows off the table. It's not his place to say that and the customer would probably complain that the employee is refusing them service on unreasonable grounds and of course the restaurant would formally have to support the customer. It doesn't make the waiter's comments incorrect, but the course of action is inappropriate.
