Personally, it's not a sexual thing for me, it's just deeply relaxing; and these people are doing this voluntarily for the most part - I'd imagine some are speech therapists or masseurs/masseuses doing this on the side, but it's mostly a hobby.

Thought I'd start a thread, I know a couple of people have spoken about it in the chat threads before and I don't know if anyone else experiences it but you never know... Listening to people whisper, listening to people whisper in foreign languages especially, is a common trigger for me; I find deep male voices work better than anything else but that's not exclusive. Getting a haircut sets it off as well, particularly when clippers are being used to shave my hair. I'd been searching for answers to what I was experiencing for a couple of years before somebody created the ASMR community (and dubbed it ASMR) and I've never once spoken about it in real life to another person because there's no scientific research into it and I think either people wouldn't understand or they'd think I was mental... Essentially I just get this pleasant tingly feeling, normally around the crown and at the back of my head, kind of similar to pins and needles but it's a pleasant feeling not one of discomfort. Sometimes it extends down my neck to my back if it goes on for long enough, but usually it happens in short bursts if I'm trying to make it happen by listening to YouTube videos. I have to be able to hear things clearly for it to work too - so not listening to videos from a distance, either I have to have earphones in or be close to my speakers. People talking in person often sets it off unexpectedly; it can make me really inexplicably tired like I'm about to droop off if someone's voice can produce that effect.

Hahaha, I totally did post in it. Maybe these could be merged and moved into General Interests? At least I'm not alone... I'd quite like to discuss it but I don't know if anyone other than Stu has any appreciation for it?

Greg, I get this, too, and I've never been able to explain it. I get it when I feel somewhat "close" to something. I get it if someone is being really endearing. I haven't had it in a while, but I used to experience it quite a bit when I was younger.

I've never understood when people try to make it out to be a sexual/perverse thing, it most definitely isn't... Dmitri is amazing isn't he? | |||

Years ago, before the ASMR community existed, I had been searching for videos of relaxation tapes that would give me that tingly feeling and I found this amazing video that I've had on my mp3 player for years now: Also there's a guy who has a brilliant voice but he uploads videos infrequently called John Dulake:
