It's really interesting to see colour photos from World War II - perhaps it's because I'm from the colour TV-era but whenever I see black and white film and photo, I have real trouble imagining it in colour and am always blown away when I see colour photos from the same time period. In my head, black and white films are associated with the idea of 'old' and therefore don't really seem real to me? I don't know if I'm making any sense...

agree with this, whilst some people find these type of things quite boring they interest me and get me thinking a lot

If you're going down the "Hitler wasn't responsible for everything" route, then it's very obvious that things were delegated down as they are in any command chain. He oversaw procedures and gave signatures to bills and ultimately had all the grand ideas and turned them into a reality; but he wasn't there firing bullets into innocent people or living in desolation. He was a man in an office detached from reality, as all men in offices of power are; which enabled him to ruthlessly order the slaughter of millions of people. As for letting armed forces escape - simple strategy based war tactics. You don't have to win every battle to win a war and you don't fight every battle just because you can.
