Have I misinterpreted the OP?
When someone says 'overly nice' I get an image of a permatanned, fixed grin American stylee customer services person... Ain't nobody got time fo that!

Yeh that's what I saw too. Like I said first time there's nothing wrong with happy people, they are great but there's also that type of over the top nice that is so obviously patronising it's gut wrenching. I think that's the type Smeagol was on about.

Yep, for most it's glaringly obvious when sentiment isn't genuine.

But i still love callum and that but i guess you can get his type of nice that he was in the big brother house and you can just get the normal nice.
I would say the overly nice that callum was? Is more hard to trust.

most of us are not on about genuine nice friends, we are talking about some that do it for other reasons.

I think people should get the benefit of the doubt. We're all different - I don't think anyone would accuse me of being overly nice, but I'm confident enough in myself to not feel threatened that other people are nice.
The people to be wary of are the ones that go from best friend to slagging people off in about 2.5 minutes. Genuinely nice people just don't do that. |

I find it so dull. That's why I generally get on better drinking with my dads friends. I don't seem to get along with people my own age a whole lot and find nothing to talk about with them. But yeah this thread reminds me that I'm a surprisingly trusting person. I usually take to people straight away and even if I have an inkling that they're capable of talking about me behind my back later I don't get offended because I just chalk it up to the nature of the ego, so to speak. There was a period for a few years where I pretended I enjoyed it all, yeah, but it involved me having to drink loads to get there. Last edited by Stu; 17-11-2013 at 01:13 PM. |

I genuinely don't like people whose main attribute is "oh they're nice" - because there is nothing else to say about them. I don't mind "oh Rachel's nice, she does lots of charity work and she lets homeless people stay in her guest bedroom" - Rachel sounds like a stand up gal. What I don't like is "Steve's a nice guy. Yep. Doesn't talk much, mind, but he's nice. Doesn't have an opinion on anything, but he's a swell guy." I can't talk to people who are so "nice" they're afraid to express an interest or opinion in anything for fear of somebody taking issue with it.

Oh dull people can suck on one. It's even worse because you're not allowed to rib on them because their niceness is perceived as being some sort of get out of jail free card. Ol' Johnny who doesn't question his job or place and just likes pleasing his equally vacuous girlfriend and watching the footie. It's all alright with this world if I can watch my team win this Sunday lol. Can't wait to get married, have kids and die.
I'm reading Generation X too much again. |
