the owner is running a serious business not a joke shop.
don't do anything.

Different perspective and very good point. Maybe the shop owner recognised you as non serous customers Kizzy?

Are you suggesting because my son is 16 he was acting like some kind of div?
The hat was adult sized, and as I said he was seriously considering buying it. I've spent a lot of money in there over the years and didn't appreciate him being spoken down to like that.
But I'm so effing polite I ended up apologising to him!...
No, I'm going to have to say something it's peed me right off!

I don't think sheriff meant that your son must have been acting like an idiot, just that the shopkeeper might be used to teenagers coming in and joking around with hats and profiled him incorrectly as a potential troublemaker or someone who was taking the piss. If you were joking around in the shop before he came over and you then apologised when he came over to you, then that's only going to make the shopkeeper think he was correct in his assessment.

I would ask him where the policy notice is re trying on hats, if he does not have one then let rip.

I would just explain to him that your son wanted to buy one of the hats. How can he do that if they don't let him try it on?

In that case I would ask him what the problem is as you could have bought it, taken it home, and then returned it and he wouldn't know how many heads it had graced.
