One drink now and again doesn't harm the baby. Its only if you drink lots. Drinking one or two units a week is quite safe

My auntie smoked and drank through her first pregnancy and the baby was fine and she drank through the other 2 and both were completely fine. Wheras, my mum didn't touch a drop of alcohol through any of hers and she's never had one pull of a cig in her life but she miscarried with twins. So i really don't think it matters to be honest. Obviously it's better to be 'safe than sorry' but ^^^ proves that drinking and smoking can still give you healthy babies.

And my mum was 17 when she was pregnant with me and didn't touch a drop either.

Ooh OK, you're on my subject now! I'm a specialist health visitor working with families who have children with disabilities and families who have lost a baby to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

I have looked after a few babies with fetal alcohol syndrome. They are generally very sweet, hard to feed, and have severe learning disabilities. They carry their condition around with them in their looks - they are unmistakeable in appearance. Not something you would wish on any poor little mite.

I think one occasional drink (note this has no 's' on the end) is OK. However, if you can't stop at one, don't start. An occasional binge is very dangerous.

As for smoking---this is the one preventable thing mothers (and fathers) can do to reduce the amount of babies who die under the age of one year in this country by at LEAST 75%.

It is true that most babies born to smoking mothers are smaller. However, you'll always meet someone who had a whopper and smoked 30 a day.
The baby's internal systems are however still under-developed. Their lungs are immature. Ther intelligence level is reduced. They are far more prone to asthma, and recurrent ear and throat infections.

They are 50 x more likely to die of sudden infant death.

Apart from that, no problems at all!

I dont think its too dangerous. Before I found out I was expecting my daughter I went on many weekend binges. I only found I when I was 12 weeks gone.... I was a little worried but she is was perfectly healthy when she was born.

Just googled it and I found this question....

Q
Can you tell me if I should be worried about getting drunk in the 3rd week of pregnancy? I did not know that I was pregnant and went to a beer garden and had at least 2 liters of beer. Needless to say, I was pretty drunk. I am worried about the development of the cells and everything. Is there any information you can give me?
A
8 glasses of beer at 3 weeks pregnancy has very little chance of affecting your pregnancy. Although the brain has begun to develop, there is very little of your blood that feeds into the embryo.

The main problem with alcohol during pregnancy is when regular consumption occurs.

I for one don't agree with drinking or smoking while pregnant. I know Doctors say your allowed one unit per week, But I wouldn't want to take that unessacery risk. When it's a lot safer all round to not drink at all. I mean I dont mind not drinking for 9 months, I didn't drink THAT much anyway.

As I recall mentioning in the serious debate about abortions, a girl I know lost her baby because she drank too much. She had already had an abortion prior to this, yet still fell into the same trap, however ended up losing her second baby through drinking too much. Whether or not it was intentional, nobody's found out yet. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I ever got into a situation like that. It is OK for the baby's health to drink occasionally, but for me personally I know I wouldn't risk any chances of putting the baby in danger.
