I think the dislike of Raph comes from peoples subconscious fear/suspiscion/envy for intelligent housemates. It's similar to the problem "posh" housemates experience who generally are disliked to some extent solely because they are different to the stereotypical extrovert chav housemate.

I agree. Also he's very shy and it takes him a while to get comfortable with new people. But he's trying to be more open.
