I thought it was harmless as he was just talking in general about a part of the human anatomy rather than directing it at someone in particular. And everyone else just laughed and continued along the theme, so it didn't seem to cause offence.

I don't think it's a particularly uncommon thought for gay men tbh. One of my gay friends practically has a phobia .

I imagine it's due to simply not having much / any experience of actual vaginas, and having distorted / confused ideas of what they're actually all about .

Tbh, I too heard that stuff about vaginas looking like a wound etc. The slang term gash comes to mind, men use it, straight men use it. So I wouldn't make too much of the fact that Tomasz is gay and I deffo wouldn't look for mother issues.
The reasons are complex I'd imagine, like men's views of women are complex.
Agree tho that it is an unpleasant and brutal comparison. And doesn't make much sense as other body orifices could be described in similar way, mouth for example. Anus looks like a hole in skin made by forcing a stick through it until it punctures it producing radiating skin wrinkles in the process.
