You can do lots of things for charity. Shave your hair. Run a marathon. Hold an auction. Donate your own money. The list goes on. He wanted to get his wife a special xmas present
He wanted to help a charity with low funding


He has enough fans to have another hit song if he wanted anyway

He wanted a christmas number 1 for a present for his wife and used the opportunity to donate what he earns from it to charity but he wasn't looking for a music career that wasn't the point of it.
