It's complicated really because, let's face it, every mining village/town in the UK was also built off the back of exploitation... and that's a hell of a lot of them.

We must acknowledge our past fully, not try to sweep it under the rug because it's unpleasant. It's certainly not the place of white people to tell others whether or not they should simply move on.

We as a country profited from the Slave Trade and the empire left the world in a worse state than it was before it was a thing. Acting annoyed because you can't handle the dark parts of your own history is just the height of immaturity. The arrogance of this country is a constant source of irritation for me, we're think we're perfect, beyond blame, but we're not. Our history is vile and telling people to get over it instead of accepting that, for many people, we were the bad guys is just gross.

We can't look down on America and go 'This isn't America' because we helped the slave trade grow, it's as much a stain on our history as it is America's.

Our history lessons don't really teach these subjects in depth. Ask most British people what they actually learned about the slave trade, and they will basically tell you that Wilberforce saved them all and little else.

I never even learned about our role in the slave trade at all. I only learned about it aftewards. We teach people the version of history that paints us in the best light and it's bull****.

It’s History...some of it was ugly and inhumane.. but it’s done and dusted. Let’s learn from it and move on.

No, you don't understand. History lessons need to be devoted to telling kids how awful the country they were born in used to be before living memory, and town mayors need to make big speeches to apologise!!!

...I agree that the past shouldn’t be erased and that it’s there for learning and understanding...with any historical figure, it’s important to know the person who I’d being tributes with things like statues etc... because that image/that likening means nothing ...anyways, specific to this article and thread...?....the report was obviously requested and written because of the substantial funding being given ...I don’t know what the local ethnic communities are but the thing with that would be to balance it and also give such funding to local ethnic youth projects and charities...because surely that would help define the progressions from unpleasants of the past...

Unironically, this. History should teach us how bad things were in the past, so that we can learn from the mistakes of those who came before us, that is why history is important to begin with.

Thats why I said 'Learn from it'....its part of our History so it shouldnt be shoved under the Carpet.

As were the Pyramids, and 99% of the world. Though acknowledging it is a good thing.

Slaves have built, or the proceeds of the slave trade has funded, buildings and institutions all over the world. The pyramids, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal. The Whitehouse was built by slaves, as was the Capitol Building, even the statue on top of the Capitol was made by a slave. Wall Street, named after an actual wall built by slaves, was the biggest slave market in the US. BMW, Audi, Volkswagen all used slave labour and are still trading healthily today along with numerous other German companies. Most people I know are quite knowledgeable about the slave trade. My husband, born and educated in the US, was taught about the slave trade. I think that's all we can do, know what happened and know that it's still happening, and try to bring about an end to it.

...it would be nice to also invest in funding for local black youth projects etc as well to promote and further equality....that might already be being done, but it’s important that it’s known to be actively so ...as well as the funding for the preservations...
