Inbetweeners is one of my favourites. When I saw this headline I looked up the cast and found the Simon and Will actors are 39 and 38 years old now.

I also watched the dance scene from the first movie - never fails to make me laugh.

I saw an advert for something or other on C4, it took ages to work out who the elderly man was

I always found that show rather silly. Weren't the characters supposed to be 15/16, yet the actors were in their 30s and looked it.

That is quite common in films and TV shows. The best example I can think of is Cameron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off being played by an actor who was about 30.

Its a brilliant show but it is of its time. The Inbetweeners came up with a couple of my colleagues recently who are early 20s and they'd never seen an episode. At first that appalled me because it had such cult status amongst me and my friends but then I thought a big part of that was because we were the same age as the characters when it came out.

I don't know if today's teenagers would find it as funny or not but certainly a lot of the jokes wouldn't make the cut now

Smallest boy LT loves it as does his pals - it has cult status among his peers

some of the jokes are timeless though, and a lot of it was very visual. For example when one of them went round to a girls house for a date and he barfed over her little brother

Here's a mind-blowing factoid for you though; a lot of teens these days (middle class ones especially) don't drink, or at least, don't drink to excess.

I was baffled by this, when I was in my teens circa 2000 it was very unusual for anyone aged 15+ not to be drunk at some house party or other most weekends.

So... A lot of them actually wouldn't find Simon's drunken babysitting relatable at all and would think he was extremely weird for it.

Season 2 is by far my favourite out of the 3. The trip to Swanage, work experience, Duke of Edinburgh awards, the exams and Will sh!tting himself

Tbf a lot of popular Shows would either not get made today because of their content, or they would be made for a "modern audience" where in this particular case the Comedy wouldn't exist, and it'd be a Teen Drama instead.

Amy Schumer's special was 99% sex jokes ,and non of them were comedic. But she wouldn't accept that she's just NOT FUNNY.

Yes some jokes are cringey & below the belt ,and I don't find everything Chapelle & Gervais does funny . However I still like some of their work .

Frankie got a bollocking all over the press and social media when he made that joke about Harvey, let’s not rewrite history to fit your narrative now

My honest thoughts on Chappelle and Gervais' specials... I think Chappelle has a lot to say in his and he does it well. I generally find that people take him too much at face value and miss the larger commentary being made. I don't agree with it word for word but I think it's a great piece of work.

Gervais' special I found lazy and low-hanging fruit. I don't think I admitted that at the time, maybe even to myself. Tribalism eh!

He has previous standup shows that are near-perfect which makes it especially glaring. It felt like an easy paycheque.

I don't understand what you're talking about... "low hanging fruit" would suggest literally the opposite.

For clarity on my position these days... I think a lot of the current trans zeitgeist is flippant about women's very real concerns and a travesty when it comes to child and adolescent mental health. And I think there's a very vocal and determined community that is deliberately putting up barriers to proper study of the various issues that is proving disastrous (for everyone).

But I also accept and recognise - to be blunt - that large part of the trans community are psychologically vulnerable and there are massive undercurrents of trauma and poor overall mental health. I think it's being handled terribly by health services and authorities, just as the associated practicalities are being handled very poorly and women's voices are often being ignored and demonised.

Given all of that - I think ther s a limit to how much parody seems reasonable in lieu of actual compassionate adult conversations about the issues.

Chappelle's felt largely like highlighting the issue, not in a way that everyone will like, but there was nuance to it. Ricky's felt too easy, lacked any new or insightful comment, and thus it felt like... Low hanging fruit. Populism.

The thing about Gervais special was the stuff he was saying was all things that TRA's on Social Media say, the "HER PENIS" stuff etc.

I like Ricky Gervais and find him funny, not every one of his jokes, some are too far (for me) but surely that's always going to be the case with comedy, we all have the power to switch it off if we're not enjoying it anymore

It's not that all of the commentary was bad, I think the one you mention was especially apt, pointing out the inherent irony of that line of ... resistence? "Stop saying offensive things you TERF wh ore!!" etc. ... you see this sort of thing on Twitter constantly.

It's something that's plagued TiBB from time to time as well. But doesn't it just unfortunately sum up the impasse of social media discourse in general. "Stop saying things that I find offensive, you disgusting piece of ****!"
