Out of interest does the St Helens area have a Football team? I'm curious because they are a very famous team in Rugby League, but have left very little impact on Football.

Around me here we have little mining villages (like say 2000 people) and every one is either a Rangers or Celtic town and i mean noone in said town supports anyone else. I drive through one now i will see Union Jacks in windows, UVF graffiti and people wearing Rangers tops. Drive a mile up the road to the next wee place and its Tricolas, Up the RA graffiti and wee bams walking around in Septic tops

In Hull we obviously don't have the religious rivalry you have but the rugby league rivalry between East Hull and West Hull is a huge rivalry. I'm East Hull born and bread but I support the West Hull team because that's the tesm of my father. So I've lived my all life amongst my rivals. |

My point being that these people would be far less inclined to be pro-terrorist if they had to spend time with an actual terrorist group.
And thankfully as the IRA are no more, the nearest punishment to them would be ISIS. And back on topic, Mikael Forssell helped cement my support for the club when he was only a few goals off Henry & Shearer for the Golden Boot.

I once bought a West Ham shirt from Hull Market. It was the one with Avco as the sponsor. Late 80s

I heard this discussion on talksport earlier and agreed with Goldstein
If you come from a big football family and going to your local team regularly is ingrained in you as a kid then it makes sense to support them. A lot of people aren't like that though and so will just pick a team for random reasons. I genuinely think I started supporting West Ham because I liked the name as a kid. We didn't have a 'local team' as such as it was a small village in Gloucestershire. There were the two Bristol teams but I never went to see them and they weren't that close. My nearest professional team was Forest Green and as an adult I've gone to watch them a lot but they were conference relegation battlers through my childhood. My Mum is from Newcastle and supports them but that was hundreds of miles from where I lived so never felt that bothered about it. So West Ham it was and whilst I picked it I don't think that matters too much. I do appreciate though that there are many West Ham fans who grew up by the Boleyn, go back generations etc and it runs a little bit deeper for those people than it might do for me |

The only time England won the World Cup. The goals were scored by Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. Both of West Ham and the Captain was West Ham's Robert Moore. Last edited by Alf; 26-09-2023 at 07:20 PM. |

And yeah we never win the league and have had so many disappointments over the years but I'm not sure I'd have it any other way. That's something I knew even as a kid that I didn't want to just support the team who were winning the most |

Apart from Berwick rangers....who are English., sk they are a no go, hearts are my nearest team.
But I support them cause I went once and got the bug. Until the stupid all seater stadiums came in..ain't been since unless its backup final. Did west ham a few times for a day out, nothing more than that really. Prefer millwall if I'm honest. I dont actually mind hibs either, cause they are Edinburgh as well. Glasgow celtic and glasgow rangers are nothing but ****e off my shoe as far as I'm concerned. So its probably locality that does it for me, cause I'm also very supportive of my actual home towns football and rugby and cricket teams. Dont go to the womens hockey, folk would call me an old perv. |

Liverpool, because an uncle bought me PJs in the style of the kit when I was like seven, and I decided that must mean I support Liverpool, and never thought to deviate from that.

..I was also a massive liverpool fan back in the day of jimmy case and super sub davie fairclough, he didnt only stand out for his hair that man. But king kenny in Europe, some memories. I think I fell out of love with them when they brought out that yellow carlsberg away kit. Still perched every time they play though, mainly because of robbo. |
