He's already made history so if his Presidency ended now he'd still be remembered above Bush and Clinton.

He has to get a second term. No modern day President has been deemed great after only one term. If he fails to be re-elected in four years time he will be dubbed a failure.

If Obama gives us eight years of what he says he's going to give us then he'll probably go down as one the greatest of all presidents.

EDIT: Zee make a good point. Obabm did jump the queue and is a very inexperienced politician especially regarding forign affairs. This will be his biggest stumbling block but unlike Bush he possesses more than a couple of braincells so I think he'll be Ok in the end.

i saw something as part of yesterdays coverage where obama said that he is fully aware that its gonna take time and maybe even beyond his time in office so if he is saying it then hopefully people can see that as well instead of being carried along with the hype

I have a feeling he will be like every other politician in the word, a liar. People for some reason are believing him more because he is black and 'Down with the peeps'

If people only knew the amount of secrets he is going to keep from us, and yet again he will keep everything hush to 'protect us'

You guys obviously are clueless to the situation, and all the hype behind Obama being president. The huge celebration is not because people think he is the messiah! The expectations for him wouldve been the same for any democratic elected president. And thats to undo a lot fo the wrongs left by 2 terms from the republicans. Thats the expectation. Its not because he is black. Its because there is change, a new regime. The reasons for the big celebration however is because a black man in a country were they were once slaves is now the president. The jury is still out on how god or bad he is gonna be. But the fact is, all the young african americans growing up right now, know that they can do anything in that country.

^Exactly.

Black people are still opressed in certain corners of the states, which is why Obama being made president is a huge public stand against that opression.

PS. I tried not to say this, but I'm a total spelling nazi, so could the name in the thread title be changed to "Barack Hussein Obama".

If you think Obama was elected because he is black, you really have no clue when it comes to reality.

it was part of the reason.

96% of black people voted for obama, it could have been superman running against him and he'd of still got a high percentage.

but its obviously not the only reason.

Blacks only make up about 10% of the population.

Obama was voted in by all ethnicities, men, women, gay, straight, etc.

His 2004 Democratic Convention speech, is what catapulted him onto the national scene.

As a minority, blacks are no more discriminated against than Jews. Gays and lesbians are the most discriminated against in the country, and that has to change. Don't get me wrong, if you're black, or gay, or both, the South is not somewhere you want to move to. So in that sense, there are areas where you are the MOST oppressed. Racial minorities are protected by the government though.

Obama's election broke down tons of barriers for ALL PEOPLE, enabling all to be able to run for the highest office in the country. Hillary Clinton did the same thing. Women are now seen as viable candidates. America jumped in with both feet. So much was broken down, which makes for any even greater chance of progressing beyond other nations when it the past, has lagged so far behind.

The country is hanging on the edge of a cliff now, just like almost all countries in the West, financially, and it will have to change itself even more to save itself.

The electing of Obama has highlighted the degree of racism in the US......Those black voters who vote for Obama because they were awaiting a black candidate are just as racist as White voters who will only vote for a white candidate.........

Yeah, sure. Just like the women that voted for Hillary, and the Christians who voted for McCain because of his religion.

Give me a break, dear.

Okay, first off, that's utter bollocks. She made the country. Without her radical economic reforms following the Winter of Discontent, Britain would have sank and died. One word; Falklands.

Even if she had "ruined the country", which she in no way at all did, what on Earth does that have to do with being a woman? Don't try and say "Im comparing the hype" because that's bs. You can't compare something as menial as hype. Her gender and Obama's race are entirely unrelated and for you to compare them is quite frankly bizarre.

Anyway, moving back to the topic; let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Give the guy a chance; he's been elected for a week. Judge him when he's gone, or at least 2 years into his presidency; doing otherwise is just narrow-minded.

It was reported this week that his approval rating dropped 15 points :

I did not vote for the guy because I am British not American, however I tend to side with the Republican party, not sure why. A female VP would have been cool and Obama missed a trick by not having Hillary Clinton as VP (He did make her secretary of state thus torpedoing her attempt at the top prize in 2012.

That said, Obmam is the onne perso who never bought into the hype surrounding him. Maybe he has read the poem If

Get me the link where his rating dropped 15 points.

You'd vote for McCain/Palin. Yes, side with the Republican Party which still believes the Earth is flat.
