Boris Johnson ‘never discussed 10pm pub curfew with science advisers’...
A scientist advising Boris Johnson has claimed he never heard the 10pm pub curfew plan discussed before it was announced. The prime minister told people in England this week to work from home where possible and ordered restaurants and bars to close early from Thursday to tackle a fast-spreading second wave of coronavirus. Some politicians have questioned whether those measures go far enough, however, with the first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, telling households they also cannot mix indoors. Professor Graham Medley, who sits on the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) committee, has now said the group never talked about the impact the policy of closing hospitality services earlier would have on infection rates. He said: “I never discussed it or heard it discussed.” His colleague on Sage, Professor John Edmunds, also previously said the curfew was “fairly trivial” and would have a “very small impact on the epidemic”. |

...yeah, I think that the impact on those businesses with the restrictions/curfew placed on them will be huge though, sadly...if it’s not something that will have infection rate benefit.../..reduction...

There will be holes in any plan but for me it's obvious that if you restrict the hours of an industry that can be risky (especially with late night venues) then there's less potential for transmission
It's not like this is a new idea as many countries in have done similar as have states in the US |

Well we might see but I expect infections will still creep up so be hard to know if this has slowed it or not, same as how infections have still risen with masks so we don't know exactly how effective that's been

yeah i think at some point 2 metre distance and face masks are less effective in mitigating infection ... we don't know enough about it yet

the student stuff is a mess, but did anyone seriously think it would work out differently the moment they opened them up? I certainly didn't ... and all this talk about isolating students away from their families gets closer to 1984 by the minute. This needn't have happened if they had prepared for distance learning

I think opening up universities for all subjects was probably an error - especially when most subjects can be studied just as effectively by distance learning. They should have given the majority of students the option of deferring or starting the degree fully online.
Some subjects need to be studied on campus (those that require lab and practical access etc.) and some of those subjects had to resume (nursing, medicine, dentistry etc... You can't just put them "on pause" because you'd create a huge workforce deficit next year). From what I understand, the University nearest to me has basically done that - most subjects are distance learning and that frees up the campus for nursing students etc. who can't really do distance learning, but can be there in person with far fewer other people around, so massively reducing the risks. |
