The idea that a 2-3 week 'circuit break' would dramatically decrease new case levels is a fantasy imo and what do you do when it doesn't? How do you justify ending the circuit break if it hasn't brought down cases? And what do you do when cases start rising again as they probably would in November/December? Remember the first lockdown was initially only going to be 3 weeks and look how long it took to substantially bring down cases/deaths

i agree, restrictions are becoming less effective, people are not complying with them in the numbers that did so in March.

Something that I get angry about. The councils complaining at the government for not paying people enough money to stay home, when the people they should be blaming are those that are blatantly breaking the restrictions and forced the closures in the first place

"There's no longer time to give this prime minister
the benefit of the doubt," Sir Keir said in a televised
news conference.
He said the short lockdown should include a
"temporary set of clear and effective
restrictions designed to get the R rate down".
Schools would remain open, Mr Starmer says.]

Well the government cannot now claim that failures are down to following the science.

I'd follow the science more than rely on in fact, any UK government possible at present.

However, they can't and won't even set out to protect the vulnerably ill and elderly, those who want officially put in protection.

Whatever happens now however, is the PM's and his Government's own doing in this pandemic.
No one else's if he's now discarding the science advice.

Unfortunate reality is that the first lockdown was effective because people were confused and scared so there was near 100% compliance. It was a one-shot deal, as myself and others said at the time. There being no 2nd lockdown isn't because "the government ain't done one" - it doesn't matter if they declare one or not, compliance levels will be nowhere near what they were in Spring and there is no realistic way to enforce it. The police and military are a panopticon; the resources to physically enforce full lockdown simply do not exist. It's voluntary compliance or no lockdown, and voluntary compliance is dropping like a rock.

The completely stupid aspect of all this is that no matter what happens with the infection rates over the coming weeks, unless Boris now does a lock down, labour will just say things would have been much better if we locked down ... **** the economy

So in the light of the young American guy getting reinfected less than 6 weeks after his first bout surely this must have serious implications as we try and move forwards?

There was someone on Sky last night saying that if we did have a three week lockdown we would still be in the same ‘loop’ afterwards ...and the contact breaker only works when you have an efficient track and trace system in place

Two to three week lockdown wouldn't be as chaotic as near 3 months.

No one advocates destroying the economy, the testing system could be improved day and night if necessary in that period.

I'd rather inconvenience the economy to save more of the vulnerably sick and elderly from this virus and probable loss of life to it for greater numbers of them again.

It seems they don't matter in the least while all we hear is save the economy.

That has the insurance of businesses to get viable again in the future, to get stronger in months and years ahead.

Once lives are lost of people, that cannot be changed or given back.

What a Nation to focus on the economy over the most in danger lives.
The government again stated, no more shielding for the at risk sick and elderly.
Not a bit of caring at all.
Nothing in place to help them officially.

Yet people support this heartlessness of the economy OVER others loved ones lives.
Makes me furious.
Absolutely furious.

To support this useless PM and the hapless Hancock people now support it seems, the dismissal of the group of scientific advice on this now.

Even though this PM and Cabinet have insisted they follow the science.
Clearly they've been deceiving us on that too probably.

Economy over peoples lives.
No conflict from me there, I know where I'd put my efforts and money in power, as to that choice.
No more lives should be unnecessarily sacrificed.
It's scandalous.

Oh and to bots.
I'm glad to see some other parties getting backbone now and calling for a change of direction for even a short time to re group in that time.
It's not only Labour who you call out on this lockdown.
Labour was calling for the first one, weeks before it was eventually implemented.

This one was called for by the SCIENCE, it also is backed by Labour but also the Lib Dems too.
It's NOT just Labour.

Who thankfully now, at last in my view, are not it seems prepared to just be giving overall support to these experiments by government with the most vulnerable of people lives as to this virus.
