This one is also rather encouraging in terms of vaccine effectiveness at preventing hospitalisations and deaths - despite the rather alarming cases surge.

I always questioned the reasoning behind schools having all the windows open for the last 18 months - surely that’s spreading the germs around the room constantly ?

It's for ventilation but to be honest, it's a tricky one, because what you want is air flowing through, i.e. coming in at one end of the room and OUT at the other, which you MIGHT get with open windows, but might not. Essentially the "best thing" would be an open window at the front of the room and an extractor fan at the back, kind of like a PC case.

However the room also "fills up" over time if there are no windows open at all so it's still better to have them open than not. 'tis all about viral dose - being near someone with Covid for 10 minutes isn't great, being in a closed room with them for an hour is 10x worse.

I don’t understand this, as a I understand it there are countries that have already opened up but kept border restrictions...Israel, USA..Netherlands, Germany, Spain for example ...where were the letters then

haha

yes Netherlands is a fine example, of how well things went woops NOT

do we really want UK to reopen things and make the exact same mistakes as NL, since whenever nightclubs are open in UK too well i don't wanna know the rise in covid cases then

Germany well tbh their recent covid cases numbers is lower than in the waves before, and vaccination numbers are looking better now either

Spain no comment, mainland is just one big disaster after another with outbreaks, the islands people are still welcome to come though

USA no idea since i don't follow it over there anymore for a while now

Well we’ve had all the windows and doors open for about 17 months but a few weeks ago we had a visit from someone and 95% of the doors have to be closed now — fire regulations or something !?!

if there is say 1 open window, and someone with covid is sitting by the window, then all that persons covid droplets are going to get spread over the rest of the room. Proper ventilation is quite a complex topic

You more or less describes most classrooms there ..

Guess that’s why we had 30 staff members off plus fewer than 500 pupils in last week rather than a thousand

I think we have to accept that the majority of the population is completely fed up with restrictions, Boris has to give it a go after all the vaccinations and see what happens. We can all see the death rate, and if it stays within reasonable bounds, then we have to go for it. I would think the upper limit will be 200-250 a day. If it goes higher than that then there will be immense pressure to lock down again. We won't know unless we try it

Honestly though I think the best middle ground would be replacing "requirements" with "recommendations". That way, the people who are done with it and basically ignoring restrictions anyway will "feel more free" to do so, but without it seeming like the "all clear" has been signalled, which will prompt people who were actually happy enough to continue limiting social contact to get back out there.

Basically "Sure have a party at your house - but we're not telling you it's totally safe".

Where is the end if you are double jabbed against Covid and still can't even visit our closest neighbours without isolating ffs

Maybe we'll end up in a world where people basically never leave their home country

Loads of America has no restrictions at all also, it’s just scaremongering from U.K. scientists trying to get other scientists to say “yes it may result in mutations and variations a threat to all”

if/when we get more concerning variants, we will have to deal with it. Personally, i think people need to be sensible and make their own personal judgements about the risk they face. It's what we do every day with everything else

Sadly the figures are weekend ones and don’t come close to the real picture.

Tuesday’s and Wednesdays are the ones I look out for

Many do that anyways though ..

I work with two women who are making arrangements gif two sizeable ‘gatherings’ for next weekend . One well over a hundred people already . There’s also the younger people who have been partying all the way through this whole mess. There’s an 18 yr old in our cul-de-sac who’s had a party every two weeks or so .

We live in one of THE hotspots and we’ve had high infections throughout the pandemic

Schools closed for summer 3 weeks ago. That's the biggest difference I can think of, unfortunately. Kids simply can't stand schools closing again though, this would be the 3rd affected year and it's getting to the point where there will be serious, irreparable damage to education country-wide.
