Come to think of it, you Americans are incredibly young. Your all just comprised of transplants from other countries. What is an American? You are US! And you just proved what everybody has been saying in this thread about the sheer ignorance of your country :

The Irish only gave the world Bono & The Potato Famine? I bashed the underbelly of America when acknowledging and respecting it's great achievements and dominant culture. You claim Ireland just gave the world Bono and a Famine.

Read some ****ing Joyce and get back to me.

Again, it was a joke. THe irony, of how the Americans dont get British humor.

Never did try to make that out. And never claimed to be a spelling bee. Your really bad at this, aren't you?

And this is from the country that changes English words and there accepted spelling for entirely no reason?

Maybe you don't understand the meaning of the quote, when America suffers the world does as well. And yes I do know the history of my country, but to be honest, the Irish took just as much part in building America than any other country. I'm not saying that Ireland did nothing, I'm just saying it doesn't deserve recognition over other countries for "building a large part of the east coast". If we're talking in that sense, the English did.

America is a melting pot, but what's funny is that you're basically bashing a culture that your people created. And glad you picked up on the ignorance of my comment, but you were magnifying the "Gawd Bless America" perspective to represent the entire country. I hardly call what you've been saying "acknowledging and respecting its great achievements and dominant culture", but either: a) I'm getting the anti-Americans mixed up in this thread or b) it's "humor" that my silly American mind doesn't understand.

Another thing that irritates me, that the british people say, it was dumbed down for the american audience. WHo the Fcuk says that?
The fact is, they dont find most british shows, or program, because they find it boring. I find most of them boring. YOu guys dont because you are used to it. Go talk to some British who have grown up in the US, and see what they think. GO ask people what their favorite TV shows are, and see what they say, even here in the UK.

I am not American, I have been exposed to their culture, and I have been exposed to the British culture as well. But I call it, how I see, it. At least, over there, I didnt have to deal with snobbery.

Nope,

Like some other American said in this thread..

"As the Good Old saying goes, When America Sneezes the Whole World gets a cold"

Its not a GOOD OLD Saying, but I find it funny how Americans take that as a compliment, that proves how America think there the only country in the world just because they have alot of people!

I think it's a cultural thing really. America is a relatively new country and with that comes a certain youthful naivety in how they live their lives and express themselves. They don't have the trials of history that weigh heavily on European's minds and so they refuse to look at the more grey areas of life, and instead ride out in pursuit of their dreams and ideals.

I'm actually rather fond of this trait that can be found in many Americans but it sometimes makes them very rigid in how they approach life, incapable or unwilling to accept or understand other ways of life. They don't like to dwell on the darkness... on the chaos that's lurking within us all, which means that some of our humour and idiosyncrasies are lost on them - bewildering to them even. They're an insular kind of nation really.

Compare and contrast. I was clearly never blanketing the whole of America. It's your problem that you think I was. And it's your problem that you fought this with reverse ignorance. And it's your problem if you think today's American culture is something the Irish created.

A total of 36,495,800 Americans (more than 12% of total population) reported Irish ancestry in the 2006 American Community Survey.

Bono and the potato famine. Christ, I really do get the American style of humor now.

The definition of an ignorant member right here.

"That just proves how you think every country Wants to be 'Famous' in the way America is" - That's quite a stretch there. You're analyzing my words too much; "fame" doesn't mean simply in the entertainment industry, it means notoriety. Hitler's famous, but I'd hardly call him an entertainer.

"Countries like Ireland and England arent as self centered and In your face, as America is!" - The members in this thread (including yourself) prove you wrong.

"Thats why Ireland dosent need to have Hundreds of Superstars and Cheesy Movies to be a good country!" - But if they could, they'd jump on it like hell.

"Just look at that thread posted yesterday about Ireland being the best Country to live in, Is America even on the Top 10?" - Irish are the farthest thing from self-centered, eh?

"

Its not a GOOD OLD Saying, but I find it funny how Americans take that as a compliment, that proves how America think there the only country in the world just because they have alot of people!" - No, we don't think that because we have "alot of people" (grammar mistake there, but I suppose since Ireland's such a great country to live in grammar doesn't matter!), it's because America is the economic center of the world apart from China. I'm not saying our social customs are the greatest, I dislike the Bible Belt as much as anyone else here and I live in it - but economically and politically we are one of the most powerful countries in the world.

Depends what part I suppose,

Its great, and this survery about the Most Easiest Country to live in, was done 4 years ago when Ireland was still sort of bad...

Now though 4 years later I think if that Survey was to be done again, Ireland would still win because its still a great place and getting better

Sorry, getting you and your fellow Irishman mixed up in some quotes.

Surely people of Irish ancestry (as well as every other ancestry in the world) are pioneering today's culture, so no need to flash the fact that 12% of Americans claim Irish ancestry.

When we have our own problems

of course you have seen a lot of Americans on youtube complaining about it. Its only natural. Who goes on Youtube to watch UK shows? The people who are interested in the British shows of course. NAturally they will be complaining. But thats a minority of people. There are always exception to the rule. The average audience, doesnt go on Youtube to look for UK shows.

ANd guess what, you have the U TV shows shoved down your throat, because people want to watch them. If people didnt, it wouldnt be on your screen. Same reason why the UK shows arent on TV asede from some specialised networks, because people dont want to watch them.

I'm generalising here of course but I would disagree with you on this to a certain extent. There's still huge class divisions in America and they're far more draconian in how they hand out punishments, especially towards the lower classes. You were a foreigner to them and so they were obviously more welcoming.

But anyway my main point is in attitudes we're hugely different... in how we live our lives. America is the be all and end all to most Americans. That's very true.

I'll close this thread, since I am a moderator. It was nice to get into somewhat of a debate with ProbeEight, and it was nice to read the humorous comments of Patrick.

Different strokes for different folks, but remember don't be bigots when it comes to other cultures or stereotype people based on their country.
