			50. Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine

One of the funkiest songs ever. He's made being caught cheating seem like a really light-hearted thing but in doing so spawned one of the best Motown tracks of all time. 49. Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man Definitely the best female voice that us Brits have produced. This song's been covered to death by pretty much anyone with a vag., but the original still holds its own. 48. Bob Marley - No Woman, No Cry My favourite from the dreadlocked legend. ![]() 47. Prince - When Doves Cry ...I wish I was alive in the 70s. 46. Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman I discovered this through watching Stephen Fry's "...In America" documentaries. The thought of travelling the dusty desert roads in the mid-West to this is delightful. It has an undiscernable twinkle to it. 45. Patsy Cline - Crazy Originally written by Willie Nelson, this was begging to be performed by a female - and the tragic story of Patsy Cline made it as perfect as it could ever be. "I had a hit out called "I Fall to Pieces" and I was in a car wreck. Now I'm really worried because I have a new hit single out and its called "Crazy"." 44. U2 - With or Without You - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ye8GLPUVsM I think everyone has someone in their mind whenever they hear this. 43. Simon and Garfunkel - The Boxer Because every time I hear it I can't help but join in with the "li-la-li"s. They're pretty much the most poetic musicians of all time. 42. The Cranberries - Linger I've been through the rest of my list and I actually think this is the most recent track on the countdown, pmsl. But...well I fall in love with this song every time I hear it. Tragically sad and beautiful at the same time. 41. Ludovico Einaudi - I Giorni I found this through use in various adverts and BBC documentaries and it was just dying to be in my library. As a young teenager I never really saw the potential for classical music to move me in any form - I could appreciate it as a wind-down from your average iPod play, but nothing more. This piece however can have me on the verge of tears :\

Yeah, all great stuff and you have a good mix of styles going on which is always refreshing. Really enjoying this Campbell one. |

			40. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Into My Arms

I may be young but I rather understand this one. It's interesting how desperation can sometimes turn you to religion (See: LeatherTrumpet), and the spirit of undying love is embodied purely and poetically here. 39. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way On the opposite end of the scale, the love-stories and rifts of Fleetwood Mac added a whole new dimension to their music and you can feel the tension they must have been feeling every time this was performed. 38. Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay Well...he did for soul music what The Beatles did for pop. He wrote 'Respect' (of Aretha fame) amongst others. One of a sad many legends who've perished in plane crashes. 37. Pink Floyd - The Great Gig in the Sky The vocals on this from Clare Torry are phenomenal. It's the perfect homage to death. 36. David Bowie - Sound and Vision The majority of his genius was exhausted in the 60s/early 70s, but 1977 saw this. It makes me dance. 35. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart It sounds timeless. 34. The Beatles - Come Together Probably one of the catchiest hooks they ever did. Hell, that anyone ever did. 33. Etta James - At Last Hearing this song is probably the nearest one can get to orgasm without sustaining an erection. 32. Bob Dylan - The Times, They Are A-Changin' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2hNhM3dHB4 The whole time of social movement and civil rights change is extremely interesting to me - it genuinely seemed like an exciting and meaningful time to be living in. I should've been a ****ing hippy. Also, the video above is one of the best introductions to a movie there's ever been. The imagery is so powerful. 31. Earth, Wind and Fire - September Funkiest. Motherfucccking. Song. Ever. I smile like the bloody Cheshire Cat when this comes on.

			30. Jimi Hendrix - Crosstown Traffic

...I think he might have been the coolest person to ever walk the planet. 29. Elton John - Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long, Long Time) It sounds incredibly cheerful but I find it rather sad. Not the last "I'm an astronaut, woe is me" song on this countdown, either ![]() 28. Stevie Wonder - Superstition Whenever I'm on ths bus and listening to this, the ride always seems to a be a little bit bumpier. 27. Nina Simone - Feeling Good The fact that this has been covered by so many artists in so many different ways just goes to show how influential and powerful this song was. 26. The Beatles - A Day In The Life The way this finishes off Sgt. Pepper's is just fantastic. 25. The Doors - People Are Strange Supposedly, this is about a mix of outsiders, drug-users and hippies. I can see that. I'd rather like to be strange. Normality is dull. 24. The Animals - House of the Rising Sun Because anyone who's anyone knows all the lyrics and will sing along regardless of how inebriated they are. Check the spelling of inebriated for me please. My penchant for big words often outruns my spelling ability. MY MOOOOOOOOOOTHER WAS A TAILOR. 23. David Bowie - Starman It's Somewhere Over the Rainbow with some cool. It has Suffragette City as a B-Side, for ****'s sake. 22. Bob Dylan - Knockin' On Heaven's Door The version by Guns N' Roses has its own merits and is probably more known, but it's the original which shines for me. It has more of a depth to it, one that really embraces the idea that you're about to die. 21. The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil The lyrics and meaning of this song were so controversial at the time - and it's a masterpiece in how clever it's been written.

			20. Oasis - Live Forever

This has a bit of personal meaning for me. I was walking around town late one night, during my 'late night walks' phase, and this came on. Out of nowhere, my older brother came walking from an alley-way and we walked along up the high street for a while. That was the last time I saw him without life support. Bit of an inappropriate song really given the circumstances, but RIP Michael. 19. Diana Ross and the Supremes - You Keep Me Hangin' On Set me free, why don't you baby? GET OUT MY LIFE, WHY DON'T YOU BABY? Best girl group ever. 18. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - (Love Is Like A) Heat Wave These give the Supremes a run for their money, though. 17. The Cure - Friday I'm In Love Probably the best pop-ish song of the 90s. 16. Don McLean - American Pie Another of those songs where everyone seems to know every lyric. Masterful song. 15. Slade - How Does It Feel? They're more known for Cum On Feel The Noize or that awful Christmas song, but at their peak this came out. It petered out after this song, but what a way to bow out. 14. Simon and Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence Probably the best lyrics I've ever heard...really haunting song. 13. The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps The prime reason why, for me, George was the best Beatle. He wrote this, as well as 'With A Little Help From My Friends', 'Here Comes the Sun' and 'Within You Without You', amongst others. Featuring Eric Clapton on a guitar solo (a rarity for a Beatles track; guest performances) it demonstrates how guitars should be played. 12. Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come Songs really don't come more powerful than this. The vocals are superb, the politics and lyrics are to-the-point and sheer hopeful, and its anthem-status amongst Civil Rights movements is irreplaceable. 11. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Another personal song. They were my dad's favourite band, and in his posessions last year I found a few Floyd tapes...every time I hear this song it's difficult not to think of him.

			10. Tracy Chapman - Fast Car

My tendency for fantasy has conjured a special reason for this song...basically it involves the same time as the Hey Jude entry. It's just...I don't know. There's elements of hope to it, and thinking towards the future; I think it'd strike a chord with any adolescent.

			9. Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy

For a very very long time, this was my favourite song. It's a dance classic - the vocals are incredible, the video inspired many spoofs [see The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony] and it's a brilliant tune.

It's pretty much everything I and anyone my age will be going through at the moment. It tells of adolescence, fear of the future, uncertainty... oh and Stevie Nicks can sing anything beautifully.
