You said Arista's picture is not art. I wondered why. You stated eventually, after I had to beat it out of you, that it is not art because it is free. It is this notion which I am currently questioning. This notion which you are again avoiding by trying to alter the subject.

So the painting of the yellow lines on the wall is not art because it is free? What a fascinating concept.

Would a painting you consider to be fine art suddenly loose it's artistic merit if it was devalued and given to you for free?

Arista's painting is not art in the sense of this thread it is a cleaver picture on a wall in the street. had the thread been what is art then yes you have a point but it is not.

Art in the sense of this thread? Stop dodging the point. You outright said the picture was not art. You then went on to explain how it is not art because it is free. You have now backed yourself into a corner and only now are you starting to mention how none of this is, in fact, within the context of the thread.

If this thread is not about what is art, then you should not have said the picture is not art in the first place.

I think the majority of 'modern art' is crap...I mean, anyone can go out and stick a shoe on top of a plant pot and pass it off as art (which is basically what a LOT of the modern stuff is). But if people want to waste money on it, its up to them.

Anything can be considered art...just depends what your interpretation of 'art' is really...

there is not corner in a thread with the title it has. The art in question is gallery art not street art or graffiti. It needs little introduction or emphasis.

if this was in serious debates with a title such as "what is art" again you have a point but it is not and you are taking it too seriously in order to try and win a pov that has no competitive content?

Your the one who said it wasn't art. Not me. Regardless of the subject of the thread, I was targetting that specific comment by itself. A comment you still can't seem to explain to me or back up.

If you didn't want it picked up on by a member and questioned, perhaps it is best that you didn't post it. After all, like your sudden new strict definition on what this thread is dictates - it's not a place to question what art is.

I have seen a pile of bricks classed as a work of art, a pickled shark, half a cow an unmade bed, obviously to some they see some form of artistic expression in them. As I said its in the eye of the beholder.

I agree most modern art isnt the best but 99% is very high.

Thing that annoyed me was the unmade bed piece... sold for millions

It wasn't art for me... it was an unmade messy bed, i could do that but id never get 5m or whatever for it..

Worst thing was he didnt draw it he took a picture on a camera..

I thought the artist was a woman.

I went to the Saatchi gallery years ago for my photography class and saw this piece. That place had lots of very strange art, including naked kids with penises and vaginas as mouths.

Then I went to London a few months ago and wanted to give Saatchi another visit. The gallery had moved and now it only contains amateur, and quite frankly, boring art. The top floor was interesting though. Had these men that were sort of squashed and leaning at an angle. It felt like you were looking at them from a different direction. Very surreal.
