An anthem is a song of loyalty or devotion, a song of praise. A national anthem is therefore by definition a song that praises a nation or expresses loyally to a nation. Caoimhe has no loyalty so why should she be a hypocrite and sing GSTQ!! |

Yeah, I understand the concept of a national anthem, although I think you're dragging it a little far there. But she shouldn't have had an exception made for her with the shirt unless they'd afforded the same privilege to John James. It was only a bit of fun, no one was asking her to make a political comment...

Dave had the Welsh kit (it just happens to also be red) So she didn't have an exception made for her, all the non-English housemates had the choice to wear the English kit or that of their own country Last edited by tmx; 28-06-2010 at 11:27 AM. |

She looked like she was trying not to scowl when the anthem was played.

She did make a face regarding it, but i just think she felt awkward because she didnt know the words!
Otherwise she might have been singing: Sinne Fianna Fáil A tá fé gheall ag Éirinn, buion dár slua Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn, Fé mhóid bheith saor. Sean tír ár sinsir feasta Ní fhagfar fé'n tiorán ná fé'n tráil Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil, Le gean ar Ghaeil chun báis nó saoil Le guna screach fé lámhach na bpiléar Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann. |

Dave's jersey was the Welsh one, not the english one with a Welsh badge stuck on. Made by Champion not Umbro.
PS Dave loves hiss footy and is a Cardiff City season ticket holder. |

She wore an Irish shirt because she's Irish.
She didn't sing the National Anthem because she's Irish. She had the option to wear the English shirt but she didn't because she's Irish. I dont see what the debate is about???

The Fields of Athenry is not a rebel song, its an Irish folk ballad!
Jeez if you heard the rebel songs you'd know it!! |

What point are you trying to make? That people who have love for their homeland country and its accurate history are just trying to be awkward, thats ridiculous..... you are coming off as a very unintelligent person.

AngelChair, I like you. We should probably stop debating this. For clarity I'll just say this then drop off this thread: That song, or a version of it, has connotations with British people who suffered thought the Troubles. I have no problem at all with Irish people and if they want to sing that song at home all day long then that's just fine with me. I just thought it was a little naive and unthinking of her to sing it there, with Steve being around.

The song is a Irish folk song, there is a republican chorus that some people sing but that doesn't make the original song a rebel song. It would be a rebel song if she sang the other chorus!
