Without knowing the context in which this happened it's hard to form an opinion, I can see both sides here.

Unless the call was urgent then I would think more that she was rude than not.
I hate phones and never answer mine when in a store.

However I have had checkout operators only actually acknowledge me when stating the total of the goods and giving me change.
At the lottery counter, I have had worse, a few times I have never had a word said between me and the assistant, she takes the slip then takes the money while constantly chatting to another assistant.

Being rude works both ways but the operator in this case,I would say, was wrong refusing to serve her.

Hmm, not sure I trust their reporting style not be totally biased towards the young professional.
The article was a little one sided, where was the till op's view?

I don't see the gender as relevant, there is no interview with the till op to give her side, all we have is the 'affronted' woman and the store.

My cousin works on tills in Tesco and he said you have to follow a process to make sure you full fill the 'happy to help'

Greet the person, offer to pack the bags, chat while scanning and a nice parting comment

Technically the till lady could not do that because the shopper was too rude to wait to make a call, if she had taken if thats fine but to make a call just before being served is rude imo
