I don't think the creators ever said it was an iconic character, it was the people writing the articles about it, assuming they were iconic because they'd won an emmy

Well they are hardly going to kill off Homer.

They only spew out this 'iconic' stuff so people get interested and it gets The Simpsons more viewers.
