...well, it's often said...'life skills' is the thing and should be a concentration in schools and there is no more a huge part of life than a mobile phone..so banning them would seem the most dumb thing and would teach nothing of a 'life skill' there..it's more allowing them and teaching when it's appropriate/not appropriate to use it in school...

..ok so we'll ban them from streets only while people are walking so they're not distracted and don't bump into anyone...we'll ban them from restaurants while people are eating with others and shouldn't be distracted by their phones...etc etc....it teaches more of a self discipline lesson to have them and teaches far more of a 'life skill' than banning them would...very few schools would have the funding to provide enough tablets needed...

..well, too much emphasis..(imo of course..)..being placed on the fact that they're phones when they're also a free classroom technology resource/computer as well as being calculators etc..so if they're banned then maybe OFSTED can supply funding to replace that free resource....strangely, an odd concept maybe but most students actually want to learn in their lessons, rather than spend time texting friends who are also in their lessons and wanting to learn/ interested in learning...any student who has no interest in learning at all, then I doubt they would have any interest, whether they had their phones in lessons or not because those phones are not really their 'issue/problem' etc ...that's something that needs addressing separately ....

Totally agree, it's just a little piece of plastic and glass that's all... And when the battery is flat or their is no signal it's about as much use as a chocolate fireguard or an ashtray on a motorbike .

The classroom should be a phone free environment , it should be accepted as such from the beginning . No phones allowed in places of teaching a simple golden rule that would eliminate this problem at a stroke.

They can't be monitored though that is the issue... teachers can't be hanging over the shoulder of every student or sat at the back micromanaging the devices can they? It's unworkable.

Well it can be put down to trust and often checking the progress of work,IF they've done little give them a textbook, or used in a lesson that's maybe nit that important for example doing a poster towards the end of term etc

As a person Whi is still at school I can say that times have probably changed and there is in need to expel pupils for tiny unnescary things that has no affect of the education or life of anyone

It would be a mixed message schools can't be responsible for the loss/damage of expensive items brought to school which is why they are discouraged, if they were relied on as a resource and encouraged then parents/kids may well blame the school if something happened.
Learning how to function in an adult world also means learning to say no if it's appropriate, I think this is a good example. Over the years schools will have tried 101 approaches to the issue of mobile phones in schools, if this one works fair play.

Maybe people just aren't realising that it's 2015 and technology is always advancing and changing.
There was probably people having the same argument years ago about bringing computers into schools, now, you need to know how to use them for a lot of jobs,a nd they also brought a lot of new potential to students who are good with that kid. Of thing e.g computing subjects, and a fast and efficient way to learn
