Funny that. I saw Derek live in Scunthorpe about ten years ago. He gave very accurate messages to one woman in the audience and I noted that he did this with zero "fishing" and no leading questions, the explanation most sceptics always use to discredit mediums whether it happens or not. I had a chat with this woman when we left the theatre and she was definitely a local rather than an inside plant on Dereks team, because I walked back to where she lived nearby as we chatted.

I can only assume Derek was having an off day when you saw him. I suppose it must be difficult on the day if you fill a theatre and Sam doesn't show up.

My cousin goes to see someone on a one to one basis who she says is scarily accurate. She told her something that happened before she was born and rang me to ask and I told her the exact thing the medium had told her. That kind of freaked me out as it was nothing spectacular just family stuff that no one would have known about it cared enough about to remember (I hadn't until she asked me).

I dont personally believe in anything supernatural. I personally believe when you die thats it your gone you dont go anywhere or turn into anything. Each to their own though.

http://www.skepticreport.com/sr/?p=207

good example of how its done and why people say

"there is no way he could have known that" or "he told me exactly what my dream was about"

There is also the same dynamic going on about seeing "ghosts"

Humans like to be interesting and have interesting things to tell people and a story such as "omg this medium told me something amazing" fits the bill for many

I've seen Derren Brown tell people stuff he couldn't possibly have known and he'll tell you right up front he's not psychic.

Exactly.

Derren Brown actually centred an episode of one his shows on how 'mediums' and 'psychics' are fake. I think he calls it cold-calling, and there are many strategies people like Derek will use; one of them is constantly saying names and letting the audience react when they hear one that sounds just a little like a deceased person they know, like Chuff and a few others have already pointed out.

It was a good watch. I love Derren Brown.

you would think that with the popularity of genealogy now all the mediums would be doing that and making a fortune rather than playing run down theatres to an audience of middle aged ladies

I wonder why they dont employ one on "who do you think you are"?

Some people do have the gift.
But the ones that are genuine don't do it for the money or fame. Well the ones I know don't.

Its the same as a magician

you dont know how its done so you think its magic

but of course magic does not exist so its just you dont know how its done

same with "mediums" you just assign not knowing how its done and or luck to she has a gift

but really its only that you dont know how they did it

or look at it this way - either everything we have leaned about science through hundreds of years of painstaking research and peer reviewed endeavour is WRONG

or your mums pal is a fibber

i will have a tenner on the latter

no you misunderstand, everything learned by science to date

the fact that science is ever learning through meticulous testing of proof and evidence and peer-review is why we have wifi and smartphones

Why does everything we already know and have learned have to be wrong?

That's a rather silly assessment to make.

There is still a vast blank canvas that science hasn't yet discovered/explored or explained so to say anything previously thought to be false actually being true would need to prove all of scientific history wrong is quite absurd.

Science cannot cure cancer at the moment. If in the future that comes about it doesn't mean to say those doctors who couldn't do anything for cancer patients many years ago were "wrong".

It's bollocks.I once went and stayed the night in a sixteenth century pub that featured on Most Haunted. Not a peep.It was quieter than my own house.Stayed up all night too.

and of course the reason people lie like this is to make themselves more important which is a basic human driver like having sex. Some people achieve this through work, a talent like singing, collecting things, being a councillor or just plain fabrication
