Default Spotify and Netflix could be blocked for UK citizens if 'no-deal' Brexit goes ahead

Quote:
Spotify music, Netflix shows and content on other online streaming services could be blocked to British citizens on holiday in Europe if the UK leaves the EU with no deal, the government has admitted.

At the moment, ‘portability’ regulation ensures that streaming services are not allowed to discriminate between someone when they are at home in the UK or if they are travelling to the rest of Europe. Users can go on holiday to France and still have full access to the Netflix films and Spotify music they get at home, for instance.

But a tranche of newly-released official documents about the anticipated impact of a no-deal Brexit includes a paper that suggests the portability arrangement that exists with the bloc would “cease to apply”.

At least they wouldn't be blocked from within the UK itself, like the misleading headline is trying to suggest.

I don't really get this, Guernsey isn't in the EU and we don't have any of those issues?

Who goes hundreds or thousands of miles on holiday to a foreign country to watch Netflix?

Nothing wrong with getting back to your hotel room at the end of the night and putting on a quick film before you sleep..

Even in the most exciting of places people don't do "holiday things" for every waking moment, especially if it's a family holiday. But Netflix isn't the only option, people can bung a few DVDs into their luggage, download stuff onto a USB stick if they're not taking a laptop/tablet, or just watch the telly.

The article in the o/p is obviously a pile of bollocks but even if it were true it wouldn't be a disaster.

Or God forbid go outside or go visit a friend.. there's a lot more to life than consuming media. I actually think such a disruption could probably be beneficial for society ... Or maybe there will be another baby boom...

But when you're on holiday, you sometimes just wanna watch something to unwind after a long day, and depending on where you are there might not be friends locally.

The article is only talking about UK Netflix accounts working in the EU, not Netflix being banned in the UK - anyone who believes the latter is possible needs to loosen their crash helmet.

When I used to take trips out of town, we only had antenna. I thought it would be horrendous, but it was nice actually. It forced me to interact more with my surroundings. This was before streaming though. Youtube is also another option which I use to watch quite a lot actually...

I don't think Netflix US accounts work outside here so that wouldn't be unusual. Our media has always been locked down. Our DVDs only work in the US & Canada... Mexico and everything south of us is in under another region code... versus Europe which share y'all same region for the most part I think? We'd have to carry a compatible laptop/player to watch them abroad... Canada makes sense though to share the region code with... we share similar media/publications and the price is in US/CAN. Most can usually change the region code on your PC CD-ROM a certain number of times... I debated buying another drive, doing that and importing media... but it's so expensive to buy import... -_-

Considering how much I love the EU, I don't tend to contribute to its economy by going on holiday to it

Most of the time I frequent Turkey, the Caribbean or Middle East

I can understand not wanting Brexit, but actively loving the EU is a bit odd. What is it you love about it?

Why do you love Britain?

I feel more attached to the idea of Europe as a whole. I actually advocate a federal Europe but that's for another day. The EU does have its shortfalls and problems which I admit need straightening out

HOWEVER, Yorkshire comes above everything. I am a Yorkshire nationalist through and through and I am more attached to that than Britain as a whole and or Europe

I'm not sure what they're on about...
I have an Israeli account for both Netflix and Spotify and they worked for me (as they should) internationally during my trips over the last couple of years - in the US, across several countries in Europe and in Asia.
