That's not really how humour works, is it.

To be fair I think Jimmy Carr leans a little heavily into "shock humour" which is, if anything, just a bit outdated these days. It's been done.

I agree with that, but I did find most of his material in the dark matters video very very funny.

Personally,I don't find jokes about the Holocaust funny, but we should be careful about censoring comedy. How far is too far? Who's going to decide?

I saw this as in it shines a light on marginalised groups, some it is still shall we say 'fashionable' to mock. The travelling community are being recognised as one of these groups, so to me Jimmy has just picked a scab as it were and it make's us uncomfortable to know many still find themselves dehumanising certain groups who we see as 'not like us'.
The audience were laughing, these are not all the alt right just regular people exposing a bias that like it or not we all possess due to years of social conditioning. So he held a mirror to that, it doesn't mean we all wish harm to travellers but it is an ugly truth that until we are confronted and deal with this like it was/is with other groups then attitudes won't change.

That's the crux of it, it still happens .. don't shoot the messenger.

I agree with Kizzys points about travellers, I don't agree that Jimmy Carr did it to hold a mirror to the crowd though. I think he just chose a "safe" group to be shocking with

Yes I agree with that Kizzy. I'm not saying he should be censored but he isn't that "edgy or brave" joking about travellers is actually very safe. It wasn't a straightforward Holocaust joke, it was a joke about traveller's, let's be honest

I'd go a step further to be honest, it's not that the audience laughs because they're ignorant and think it's fine to mock the travelling community... the part that triggers the laugh is that the audience DOES know that some groups are considered "off limits" and others "not so off limits" and the immediate recognition of that incongruence is essentially the entire joke. To break the joke down and make it unfunny... it's not the community that's being mocked, nor the holocaust, it's the selectiveness and hypocrisy that we all know is very real in society. It's social commentary through satire. I haven't actually seen the show though in order to say if it's done well or not. As, to be fair, the level of skill behind a piece of satire really can be make-or-break as to whether or not it hits the mark.

He used the modern world perceptions, but had to drag up one of the worlds history's worst thing to ever happen to highlight it.

However if you are just picking 'easy' 'targets' then you are a bit of a knob really.
