He was definitely a more aggressive player than Lineker, as well as being the taller and stronger of the pair. The only thing Lineker probably had on him was basic speed and positioning for the easy tap ins but Van Basten added so much to a team in so many other areas, plus his goalscoring record at club level is better than Linekers. Lineker -461 (239) Van Basten -280 (218) And there's not much in it at international level.

Like Setanta said, Van Basten is in a total different league than Lineker. Average team? England arguably had their best teams in 1990.
Van BAsten was the best striker, in the world, while Lineker was playing, not only the best striker, but one of the best players in the world. ON the world stage he has a hell of a lot more titles than Lineker, European championships, clubs and country.
Its not even close.
1977 european cup winners liverpool (england)
1978 european cup winners liverpool (england)
1979 european cup winners nottingham forest (england)
1980 european cup winners nottingham forest (england)
1981 european cup winners liverpool (england)
1982 european cup winners aston villa (england)
1984 european cup winners liverpool (england)
1985 european cup runners up liverpool (england) after that they decided to kick us out of the european cup for five years, can you blame them? it was getting a bit easy as you can see, since we've been back in we've won in three more times and had four beaten finalists and are now domminating that much platini is starting to cry.

so van basten had he's era without the best players in the world there

Not entirely true Wannashag. England had a great run in the late 70's and early 80's, but Italian football was already emerging as a powerful league with Liverpool only beating Roma on penalties in 84 and Juventus beating them 1-0 the following year, so it's fairly obvious that a change was happening anyway.

Errm, yeah. Thanks for proving my point. Thats when the Italina league became the best in the world. The English league was banned, and as a result, all the best players in the world went to Italy and spain. Milan dominated Europe after that, and thats when Van Basten and Lineker were playing, which is where the relevacne lie. And 3 more times, where just like I told you, in the late 90s and 2000. English teams didnt win any European championship from 84 till man u in 98. The ban was lifted in 1990. You are doing nothing but proving my point, that Van Basten played in the toughest league in the world. Lineker didnt.

everton would have won it in 86 after winning the league and cup winners cup the season prior,
the liverpool side of 88 with barnes, beardsley, aldridge and mcmahon was a brilliant team, even if wimbledon beat them in the cup final
and how well could george grahams arsenal teams have done? you think them fancy dan italians would like to play against them?

It would have been interesting alright, but the point is that whatever English side got through would almost certainly have faced the great Milan team of the late 80's and early 90's. They were unstoppable in a league that was attracting all the high profile names of the time.

Can't believe I forgot Brazilian Ronaldo. Throwing him in instead of Buffon.

1. Michael Laudrup
2. Zinedine Zidane
3. Romario
4. Marco Van Basten
5. Peter Schmeichel
6. Paul McGrath
7. Eric Cantona
8. Ronaldo (Brazilian)
9. Roy Keane
10.Think I'm going to put in Roberto Baggio ahead of Weah
