I don't think they like to be called comedienne's because of some PC reason.

The same way a lot of "female actors" don't like being called "actresses". They are actors.

I suppose it is weird that there are different names for them, 'comedian' and 'actor' both seem pretty gender neutral to me

Especially comedian, I would never say comedienne
