Yeah, each local council is split up into wards (towns) and whoever has the most votes within them gets a seat in the council, a party has to reach a certain number of seats within a council to secure an overall majority. It works similar to electing MP's to the House of Commons

I think as more actual overall council results are revealed, that bar will change to count council results rather than councillors

Think David just said 2400 seats are up for grabs nationally

Should definitely watch the General Election coverage next year, I was 15 when I watched it first time and stayed up till like 5am on a school night LOL. I've been excited for the next one ever since it's a great night and more of an event/more important than other elections

IND means independent, i.e they're standalone candidates that belong to no party

Grant Schapps is not suited at all to his role now for the party, he doesn't come across on anything as convincing.

This I think is going to be a really strange local election,I almost can agree with Chukka Ummunah that we could be in the politics of 4 party politics now.
Although I,for myself anyway, live in hope for the demise further of the Lib Dems.

Thing for me is I thought that yes UKIP may do well in Euro and local elections but they won't ever carry that into national elections, but that poll Jeremy Vine showed kinda disputes that how people who voted UKIP tonight are likely to do so again in 2015. I still feel when push comes to shove though that people won't trust them on the national stage especially when their policies come under more scrutiny.

I ended up voting Lib Dem in the local elections here lol, only because I hadn't planned to vote at all but of the parties competing the Lib Dems had done the most in the local area to try and engage with voters and I found their literature more agreeable than the other parties

Actually I was unfair before, the Lib Dems do generally do a good job at local level and I know a good few Lib Dem councillors who are furious with their parliamentary colleagues.

I still think overall,we have had, with good and not so good publicity as to the media, UKIP overkill for the last few weeks.
I also think the announcement of the increase in EU immigration to the UK being announced today will also have played a role in those going out to vote too.

Other than UKIP, these election results could in fact turn out rather poor for all 3 main parties despite what councils those main parties win.

I also agree that I'm not sure whether UKIP can translate local/European success onto a national scale. The day they get a seat in the HoC will be a very disconcerting one in British politics

I agree, I think you have it spot on although I still hold the view too that a 30 overall majority in 2015 is not out of reach for Labour,'IF' they carry out a really good and strong campaign.

They were nowhere last time they were a joke party! Like Kilroy Silk and his nutters .... then all of a sudden UKIP are EVERYWHERE!

I partly blame Nick Clegg for setting up the opportunity for those Euro debates with Nigel Farage, since then all we have had on TV is UKIP really as main political news.
