A man detained at the scene of Friday's fatal stabbing of MP Sir David Amess is 25-year-old Ali Harbi Ali, Whitehall officials have confirmed to the BBC.

Police said he was being held at a London police station under the Terrorism Act 2000 and officers have until 22 October to question him.

They spent Saturday searching three addresses in the London area.

The BBC understands Mr Ali was referred to the counter-terrorist Prevent scheme a few years ago.

Prevent is the UK's terrorism-prevention programme, which aims to stop people being radicalised.

How do the security sources know he planned this more than week in advance, did he tell them that?

I wonder whether Angela Raynor now regrets her ridiculous outburst about Tories being "scum"? I believe the language used both by politicians and the public at large, has contributed to this latest outrage.

When I used to sit in surgeries there would be me, only if it was in connection to my area of expertise, the MP and either his secretary or parliamentary assistant. That's it. There were no security measures because there were no security worries. Then MP Jo Cox was murdered in the street. I visited one of the MPs I used to work with recently. There's a camera entry phone, an anti-blast bag over the letterbox.... How can we expect them to continue face to face appointments now? Doctors have decided patients don't have to be seen face to face, I think politicians have more reason to do the same.

having a policeman guard an mp constantly doesn't guarantee their safety. I think they will need to rely on the fact that most people don't want to kill their mp in the same way that an ordinary member of the public doesn't expect to be abducted, assaulted etc

We don’t need to see his Dad, he is not responsible for his 25 year old sons actions

The point is, these detestable people don't care who or how they may kill someone.
I think a Police presence wouldn't help.
How many Police would be needed for instance.

I do think surgeries should have protective things set up.
Face to face can be behind protective screens for instance.

Perhaps too, greater security going to the surgeries, and leaving them.

This is 2 murders in 5 years, where around their surgeries brutal murders have been ABLE to be carried out.

It's not new either.
A Lib Dem MP was a target years ago too, one of his staff got injured at their surgery.

Also Stephen Timms Labour MP was stabbed in his surgery, thankfully he survived too.

MPs are high profile, the media attention is rightly ongoing and all over the brutal incidents.

In the past 11 years, there have been 4 attempts to kill an MP.
2 have cruelly and brutally lost their lives.

While I get what you're saying, I do however feel something has to be done to ensure the safety of life of MPs.
It ONLY takes one extremist, despite every other single constituent who wouldn't, it's that one extremist who cunningly will plan and go forward to carry out their evil intent, so it's ALWAYS now it seems a possibility.
Which is devastating for politics.

We elect Politicians to serve us, however I think they are owed for that service, to be at least as safe as it's possible to be.
They are targets sadly.
So I hope some security measures are enacted.
Safer surgery settings for one.
Plus less travelling to and from them alone.

Other than a handshake, I can't see what other contact is needed in dealing with constituents face to face.
So from behind a protective screen should be the main thing in my view.

Plus in and out by different entrances with company, so to limit direct contact with others.

In Jo Cox's case, she was even brutally killed leaving her office, she needed company with her as she wasn't just stabbed, she was shot too.
So there is the other warning that needs to be heeded and which hasn't been.

The danger is NOT just within the surgery setting itself.
The danger is there before and after the surgery too.

I'm not going into the Labour, Conservative divide on this issue.
I canvassed for Jo Cox, she was a wonderful MP and one who believed in consensus politics.

David Amess is another, he was admired all across parliament.
He was always a backbencher yet he worked closely with all Parties MPs.

It's heartbreaking what's happened to him just 5 years on from the last brutal murder of an MP.

Those deaths mustn't count for nothing, big changes need to be put securely in place, as to enough security to protect life for MPs as much as possible, when carrying out their surgeries.

David Amess was a very popular MP indeed.
Across politics he was respected.

Even if you disagreed with him.
He was still someone to admire.
A truly brilliant constituency MP for both his constituences.
Basildon and Southend.
