Awful for the cancer teams, patients and families. An ex-colleague of mine passed away in November after her treatment was paused due to the pandemic. She had been doing so well to.

But surely the £500

Even with the Fraud,

The Prime Ministers office

...oh I’m so, so sorry, Annie......it’s all so terrifying enough, but you know the importance of it all...but to know the importance of it all and to not have it there for you...?...I just can’t imagine...it’s heartbreaking...

Thankfully we get the choice of throat and one nostril OR both nostrils .

We also do the swabbing ourselves .. again that’s better as it’s uncomfortable when you do it so gawd knows how it must feel if someone else shoves the swab up your nostrils !!

Vallance: South Africa and Brazil variants
of more concern
On the variants first identified in
South Africa and Brazil, Sir Patrick Vallance
says they are "definitely of more concern".]

[He adds there is evidence they "might be less susceptible to vaccines",
but stresses this is not certain at this stage.]

The first media question comes from Hugh Pym from
the BBC - he asks if the PM expects
the death toll to rise quickly and fall slowly?

Mr Johnson says that the death numbers will
continue to be high "at least for a little while to come".]

The UK variant has a higher mortality

Old variant 10 in a thousand would die

New UK variant 13 in a thousand

Brazil and SA variant may not be covered by vaccine

Uk variant is covered

Thats..weird in virus terms.

As generally they will mutate to be more spreadable, but less dangerous.

Luckily, it seems to be not 'that bad' in terms of 'worse' (finding it hard to word that)

Brazil/SA not covered by vaccine is VERY BAD NEWS. As it basically means, vaccines are pointless? As, new mutations will just keep coming which will get round any vaccine.

can’t seem to be suspicious that this variant being more deadly might just be an excuse to cover that idiot from his own xmas rules that have resulted in mores cases = deaths

The second media question is from Dan Hewitt
at ITV News.
He asks how likely it is that
the lockdown will now last longer in light
of the variant announcement

Boris Johnson says the current package of
measures is enough to deal with new variant
and there are "signs" in the data that
the restrictions are having an impact.

The prime minister says "we really can't begin
to consider unlocking" until it's clear
the vaccine programme is working
and there aren't new variants.
He adds that the rate of infection
also needs to come down.]

Sky's deputy political editor, Sam Coates,
gets the next question, asking the PM
if it is right that the rules are more relaxed
than they were in March

Mr Johnson said the law is being
enforced stringently, adding they
will make sure people are not gathering.
"It is down to everyone watching to follow the rules,"
he says, citing the now-famous Stay Home,
Protect the NHS and Save Lives slogan

He asks Sir Patrick if he has any theories
as to why the variant is spreading more quickly

Sir Patrick says it could be because it binds
more solidly to receptors or grow
more quickly in certain cell types.

Sam also asks whether we have passed the peak

Prof Whitty says in some age groups
it is not going down, and could even be growing.
As a whole, Prof Whitty says the death rate
is broadly flat, but says it is definitely not
going down across the board.
"The peak of deaths may well be in
the future... this is high and very precarious."]

[On vaccine efficacy, Sir Patrick Vallance says different studies
will have different results and warns
against taking one out of context.
He warns it is still "too early" to come to
a definitive judgement.
Sir Patrick adds that there is a "range of data" on
the increased mortality, noting that some studies show no increase.]

[There is a "lot of uncertainty" and a "lot more work" still to do.]

Patrick just said this Virus with stay with us Forever
