[The majority of people in the UK who are unlucky enough to catch monkeypox will have a very mild form of the disease and recover quickly at home. A small number, though, may need specialist medical treatment.] It is a low number so no numbers online https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-61569397 Last edited by arista; 01-06-2022 at 01:59 AM. |

302 Cases in the UK Today
[More cases of the rare monkeypox virus, normally found in Africa, have been confirmed in the UK, bringing the total to 302. Twenty-six other countries have also had cases, including many in Europe. Health officials say anyone can get monkeypox, particularly if they've had close contact with someone with symptoms. They advise contacting NHS 111 or a sexual health clinic if you have a rash with blisters on any part of the body.] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-61709659 Last edited by arista; 06-06-2022 at 03:52 PM. |

[Law makes monkeypox a notifiable disease in England
England is making it a legal requirement for doctors to notify their local council or health protection team about any suspected monkeypox cases. It brings the infection in line with ones such as measles, scarlet fever and tuberculosis. The move is intended to help manage the rare virus, which appears to have been affecting people in many countries, including the UK, in recent weeks. The UK has reported more than 300 confirmed cases. Another 26 countries have also had cases, including many in Europe.] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-61723964 |

The World Health Organization says it is working with experts to come up with a new name for monkeypox.
It comes after more than 30 scientists wrote last week about the "urgent need for a non-discriminatory and non-stigmatising" name for the virus and the disease it causes. Continued reference to the virus as African is both inaccurate and discriminatory, they said. Some 1,600 cases of the disease have been recorded globally in recent weeks. While 72 deaths have been reported in countries where monkeypox was already endemic, none have been seen in the newly affected 32 countries, such as the UK. At the latest count, as of 12 June, there were 452 confirmed cases in England, 12 in Scotland, 2 in Northern Ireland and 4 in Wales. The World Health Organization says it will hold an emergency meeting next week to determine whether to classify the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern - the highest alarm the UN agency can sound. The only other diseases this has happened for in the past are Swine flu, polio, Ebola, Zika and Covid. World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: "The outbreak of monkeypox is unusual and concerning. "For that reason I have decided to convene the Emergency Committee under the international health regulations next week, to assess whether this outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern." |
