Whereas an act like Girls Aloud () are under-rated in other countries because they are not popular there.

And for example a good singer may have an amazing voice but doesn't have good material. Doesn't that make them under-rated too?
Your twisting a popularity alone standpoint their on being underated though. Whats not to say the whole of America could hear Girls Aloud tommorow morning, but find them utterly shit? Just because nobody has heard of you does not automaticaly entitle you to the right of being underated.
Underrated; not rated enough; if the whole of America heard Girls Aloud tomorrow morning and found them really bad then they'd just be badly rated; I think the term 'underrated' is quite vague.

Are we meaning 'an artist who is not recognised in the main-stream' or 'an artist who is recognised in the mainstream but is often overshadowed by others'?

Underated is more a genuine fantastic artist who attracts rave reviews from small circles or underground publications but does not have the mainstream appeal to make it big or has not been covered, unfairly so, by the larger press.

E.g. Not the Jonas Brothers or Girls Aloud [and thats not a negative reflection on either group, their just not underated, IMO.]

I think Ladyhawke's a big recent one. Which is strange since everyone loves her yet she's never had a high placing single. Shame really, but her album's doing well at least.

she's hardly under rated. She's not even released an album, she's not rated period. If anything she's over rated for what she's actually done considering she amde various 'look out for in 09' lists'.

Let's break down the word itself:

Under (i.e. low, poorly) ... rated (popularity/quality)

And from my knowledge the Jonas Brothers are rated very low by many people in this country. I.e. making them under-rated. I am a Jonas fan so yeah I'd know kkai?

So by your definition the Fast Food Rockers were underated? After all, their music was rated very low and they lost popularity rather quick.

The Jonas Brothers are all over TV here. They have free merchandise with every teen magazine in the country. My little sister has her bedroom wall covered in their posters. Their not underated. Or overated. They are a product of exactly what they are : A product.

Ewww no!

What a way to turn a point of view into something utterly ridiculous. I felt that is insulting my intelligence when really I have backed up what I've said, logically.

They are under-rated. I have nothing more to say.

Two different tenses in a sentence used about your intelligence and me apparently insulting it. Fuck me, that is irony to die for my friend.

You might have backed up your point logically but you dont appear to be fending mine off very well. Again, from the top...

They have huge exposure through multiple media channels and sell huge with their target markets. Sorry, but the notion that they are underated is fucking hysterical.

I totally agree.

I have an 11 year old daughter, so I'm well aware of just how in-your-face the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and all the other "Disney Kids" are.

She has CDs, DVDs, posters, magazines, pencil cases, etc. with all their faces on. Every ad-break on Disney Channel, they are plugging another of their 'products' to their young viewers.

I'm not knocking anyone who likes them, but I fail to see how anyone can class them as under-rated, when they're pushed in the faces of children and parents through the medium of TV and Magazines aimed at the 'tween' age group.

My definition of 'under-rated' is this: A very talented artist, who hasn't reached mainstream audiences, and doesn't get recognition or airplay in the media. That includes TV, Radio, Magazine/Newspaper Articles & Reviews.

Again, this is just my opinion. No disrespect to anyone else's opinion intended.

Here's my short list of under-rated artists:

Anna Nalick
Kate Havnevik

OMFG I just thought of one and it is so is!

Mark Owen! His solo stuff was incredible and it got no recoginition whatsoever. He wrote all the songs himself and he sang them(duh). In Take That,he is the only one who can sing, dance, play guitar and piano and write!
