The Duke of Cambridge has paid tribute to those involved in the vaccine rollout after getting his first Covid jab on Tuesday.

The 38-year old shared a photograph showing him being vaccinated by NHS staff at the Science Museum in London.

He is the latest senior royal to share having received the vaccine, following the Queen and the Prince of Wales.

"To all those working on the vaccine rollout thank you for everything you've done and continue to do," he tweeted.

Real-life data on the vaccine rollout suggests the jabs are providing even more protection against Covid-19 than was expected from clinical trials, according to Public Health England (PHE).

After a second dose of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, the chance of falling ill with Covid is reduced by around 89 per cent, scientists believe. Trials put the jab’s efficacy around 70-75 per cent.

Full protection appears to be reached seven days after the second vaccination. It is possible that the UK’s policy of leaving up to 12 weeks between doses, rather than the three-week gap used in the clinical trials, explains the greater efficacy.

PHE epidemiologist Meaghan Kall said there was “evidence to show that Pfizer (initially thought to have the edge on effectiveness) is actually running head-to-head with Oxford/AZ”.

The Pfizer jab provides a similar level of protection against illness as Oxford/AstraZeneca, and cuts the chance of death by 95-99 per cent.

Touch wood, it’s looking like they’re effective against a wide array of mutations, they may even have some effect (T cell immunity) against other non-COVID coronaviruses.

I was wondering if they would maybe offer some protection against other coronaviruses like the common cold and the Flu ?

The flu isn’t a coronavirus but some common colds are. “The cold” is actually a variety of different minor viruses that all have similar symptoms, rather than one illness. Most are variations of Rhinovirus but I think something like 1/4 of colds are a cluster of coronaviruses, they think the vaccine might give some protection against those. Also interestingly, they think that people who have had a “coronavirus cold” within the last few years might have some protection against severe Covid.

there will be loads of different mutations appearing. Only worry if hospital admissions start to increase among the vaccinated population

The second person in the world to get the Pfizer-BioNTech jab has died of an unrelated illness.

Bill Shakespeare, 81, received his first Covid vaccine in December at University Hospital Coventry shortly after 91-year-old Margaret Keenan.

Coventry councillor Jayne Innes, a friend of Mr Shakespeare, said he had died on Thursday and added the "best tribute to Bill is to have the jab".

Mr Shakespeare had worked at Rolls Royce and was a parish councillor.

The 81-year-old, who had served his local community in Allesley for more than three decades and was an inpatient on the hospital's frailty ward at the time of his first jab, said it had been "wonderful".

Ms Innes wrote in a post on Facebook: "Bill will be remembered for many things, including a taste for mischief."
