i find it difficult to have any sympathy for a drug addled popstar who had every opportunity in life and chose to self destruct. We have seen the same thing happen over and over throughout the years. It could well be that his family are relieved it's all over

Addiction is hard. I speak for experience. It's not easy to get rid of at all.
Many people manage it, but then relapse.

Hmmm…I find that hard to accept. Instant fame and fortune is fine until it starts to dwindle. Although those opportunities were there some find it difficult to deal with..we have seen it happen to so many. Drugs and alcohol are readily available and when your life turns around and that fame disappears it must be easy to turn to them as an escape..and addiction sets in. It’s a vicious circle and unless you have a strength within to stop the self destruction it’s inevitable that things will spiral out of control and a life ends because of it.
I’m sure his family are not relieved it’s over…they probably had hope that he could get through it. It’s just all very tragic for everyone involved.

No one chooses it bots, and this is a very ugly post for anyone who has lost someone to addiction.

The fact that we see so many people who got rich & famous young lose themselves to drugs, alcohol and depression should indicate strongly that it isn't, in fact, "every opportunity" at all and seems to leave a lot of them - maybe even most of them - feeling rather empty.

When you have an addiction it doesn’t matter if you are a millionaire or a tramp
But in most cases it’s worse having the resources to feed that addiction

Addicts are not thinking like a normal person

Same with depression, multi millionaires kill them selves people think they have everything but in reality they would give everything to feel normal

I wonder if his latest release will go to No.1 now, its a decent song will be really ironic if it does given his label dropped him

…I guess for addictive personalities, some advantages or blessings as it were, become curses because they can open up much more the ability and availability to feed those addictions…so it’s always quite a layered and complex thing …he did have ‘advantages’ I for like, but it would seem that he had struggles in using those in a positive way that would have helped a path away from his addiction and help to manage his life to be less reliant…

…I feel hugely sad for his family/friends/loved ones because in a way, watching a person you love with an addiction has parallels to watching a loved one with a terminal physical illness such as cancer…that helplessness of losing a battle to something that is seeking to take away everything that is that person and is so devastating…it’s a very difficult thing to watch and there is often also a sense of not being to prevent as well…which is obviously misplaced but it’s nevertheless felt and it’s something that will always be carried…

I have to say again to anyone who has lost someone to addiction this is just clearly untrue. My own mum had a thriving career, we were financially very comfortable, plenty of friends etc. at age 47, by 55 she was in a council flat suffering daily panic attacks and drinking every night, and by 58 she was dead of multiple organ failure caused by alcohol and prescription painkillers.

It's not just a sad affliction for poor people "and those who are doing well won't be affected". No amount of money will fix your mental health. Not a £100 therapy session and not a £billion fortune.

A lot of very rich celebrities have serious mental health issues. We should know by now that material wealth and opportunity has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Very good post

There are a lot of 'functioning' addicts. Can keep down a job, pay the bills, have friends, BUT still have bad addiction.

you have just written a load of stuff not related in any way to my post. People don't seem to be very comfortable acknowledging the lives that addicts destroy, by their own choices, the families they destroy. Why not a little more about that?

I state again, he had every advantage. He could go to rehab, get the best help, much more than 99% of other addicts. He, by his own choices, took a path that led to his death, no-one else. If that evokes sympathy in some people fair enough, but don't tell me i am heartless or whatever for my stance, because it's just not true

you really can't take anything from the final act that saw him perish. It was years of self abuse that brought him to that inevitable point. It's like saying keith moon died in a swimming pool because he couldn't swim
