I think it remains watchable telly but S1 as a standalone narrative, yes, was by far the best season; potentially could have then had a very different S2 with the fallout/consequences (inevitably being caught) would have been good. It was unrealistic from the first murders onwards that he carried on "evading" ... and really mostly because the first season was more successful than they expected I think.
