The best battery operated thing is simply....a torch.

A battery-operated torch is freedom in your hand. No plugs. No wires. Just press a button and boom you have portable daylight. It works during power cuts, camping trips, late-night snack missions, and heroic searches for things you dropped five seconds ago and without the humble torch could be lost forever.

It is reliable. It is simple. It needs nothing but a couple of batteries and in return gives you vision, safety and occasionally dramatic under-the-chin storytelling lighting and even can turn a dark room into a party with some off / on action.

Other battery devices entertain you. Some distract you. But a torch can actually protect you. It guides you. It turns fear into confidence and shadows into mere background decoration.

In emergencies, it’s essential. In adventures, it’s indispensable. For a spooky story, its a mood setter.

Like a Magic wand of plastic grace, the battery operated remote control takes the battery related objects pride of place

With just one click i can be transported anywhere, like game of thrones, the remote sits beside me on my very own cushioned throne.

You save me from having to rise from my duvet nest, to get up like in olden times having to poke the tv like a pest

Before you came what despair, having to cross the room?? Absurd! Unfair!

Adjust the volume by the screen are you joking me like Mr Bean?

I now reign with but a click, a King with a thumb so slick, watching the Traitors whispered schemes or love Island contestants sun kissed dreams,

Brave choice, probably the first thing you think of when thinking of batter operated things (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it). But it is a much-underrated tool, the torch. You only really find that out when you need one and haven’t got one. The trick is to have lots, to the point of saturation, in drawers, glove boxes, bedside tables… so whenever the lights go out, you’re never more than six feet from one.

Jake

Almost a joint winner, but the love poem clinched it. I’ve had more arguments in my life over the remote control than I’ve ever had over anything else. It’s the key to other worlds, to thrills and spills, to stories from far-off lands. It is the gateway to the great entertainer and educator that is TV. I’m not even going to criticise your meter (which on the whole was pretty good) because the poetry was so heartfelt and it’s a love affair I’ve shared myself for as long as I can remember.

It’s a shame for you that others chose the remote control, otherwise this would have been my top choice. Hours of fun the Gameboy, and you can take it anywhere. I had mine confiscated regularly when my homework wasn’t getting done. Few things were more distracting and absorbing. Love it and I miss it.
