I'm trying to work out what happened after he was buries. If someone called an ambulance their would've been a crime scene or enquiry, but he couldn't get to the hospital in a coma. No one in the village isn't affected so couldn't have found out, which causes confusion.

Get in, i knew he'd be alive (like most), he is too valuable to Emmerdale to kill off.

I'm guessing he either crawled away out of the ditch and was found or something like that.. there would have been a small crime scene there but nothing that would have taken weeks to when Pete and James went looking for the body.
