Default Garyy's Top 100 Songs of The Noughties [80 - 71 posted]

yeah, thats right I'm ripping it off, tho probably less than 100 because my attention span doesn't last that long and this is really only to put off doing academics. I'm currently making the list so we shall see. coming either tomorrow or tonight.

OK so just to clarify, this countdown is a selection of songs from my favourite artists this decade and the songs that define it best. oh and I did manage to get 100 after all! And starting us off...

100. Jennifer Lopez feat. Ja Rule – Ain’t It Funny (Murder Remix)
Jenny from the block released this new take on the utter mess that was Ain’t It Funny [the original] which played on her Latina roots and had an exotic feel to it, in 2001. The Murder Remix however, took the song a whole new direction, adding a rap from the hottest rapper on the scene at the time, Ja Rule and was released as a single from her remix album. It went on to surpass it’s original in success and become one of her biggest hits.

99. Nickleback – How You Remind Me
Perhaps their most well known single to date, the song hit #1 in the US as well as in 7 other countries, though only managed to get to number 4 in the UK. Some write it off as dreary but personally I think it has a charm to it and is definitely one of the more memorable rock songs of the early Noughties.

98. Adele – Chasing Pavements
Adele’s second big ballad from her debut album, 19, caused a minor controversy in certain parts, after the meaning of the phrase ‘chasing pavements’ was defined in the urban dictionary as a gay sex reference. In reality, the song is about a fight with her ex-boyfriend and, well, it’s pretty damn good. The video is pretty also

97. 50 Cent – Candy Shop
Sick beat. Sexist lyrics. Hot video filled with scantily clad women and 50 Cent in a big fur coat. What more could you want? The lyrics are, in actuality, pretty vile, describing oral sex. But the catchy chorus and infectious beAt make up for that.

96. Blu Cantrall and Sean Paul – Breath
This track tore up the airwaves in 2003, a time when Sean Paul was at the peak of his career collaborating with such others as Beyonce, 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes. Since then unfortunately, Sean’s list of collaborators as decreased in quality and fortunately Blu has just disappeared, never to be seen again. This track remains a 2003 classic though.

95. Britney Spears – Slave 4 U
It was the evolution of Britney. Gone was the super cute, cookie cutting pop princess we saw in the ‘Oops!... I Did It Again’ video and in her place was a bonafied sex symbol. The lead single from her third album, the song did surprisingly poorly on the charts, only managing to reach #27 on the Billboard Hot 100, though it hit number 4 over this side of the pond. It’s classic Britney, at her best.

94. Amerie – 1 Thing
Singer/actress Amerie’s biggest hit to date, featured on the soundtrack to Will Smith flick ‘Hitch’. It features a sample of the Meters’ ‘Oh Calcutta’ and earned her a Grammy nomination. A definite high point to a very poor start to 2005 in music, it’s hot, fun video and rap from Eve gave it a helping hand to being one of the catchiest tunes of the year.

93. Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Can’t Stop
A forgotten gem in the Pepper’s back catalogue, the song is rarely played live and charted very poorly. It’s one of my personal favourites of theirs. It was a toss up whether to include this or ‘Dani California’ but I went with this due to its stonking chorus and smooth vocals. And because the latter was overplayed like hell.

92. Shakira – Whenever, Wherever
It was Shakira’s breakthrough into the English language market, having sold millions in her native, Columbia. One of her signature songs, she showcases her bellydancing ways – something we were to see a lot more of from her this decade – in the video. In later years it’s becomes overshadowed by her bigger hits but it’s always a favourite of mine and is so timeless.

91. Justice – D.A.N.C.E
French electro duo Justice released this tuuuuuuunne in 2007 off their ‘Cross’ album. It was the song that introduced me to them and I’m sooo thankful. The video is awesome also. They’re not that big over here yet, but if you haven’t heard it them listen and if you have, share the Justice love.

90. Girls Aloud – Sound of The Underground
This was a close call for me, between Call The Shots and this, but it won in the end. Fresh off the back of winning Popstars: The Rivals, the girls debut single shot to #1 and remains one of their best songs. Breathy vocals and a gritty video make this track era defining of their early days. Pity it took them another 4 years to start looking hot.

89. Evanesence – Bring Me To Life
The Amy Lee fronted rock group made their debut with this thrilling number featuring guest vocals from Paul McCoy of the band 12 Stones. It starts with its eerie piano intro before building up to a massive chorus. The group biggest hit by far, it was also featured on the ‘Dare Devil’ soundtrack. The song reached #1 over here and Australia and was a Top 5 hit in the US and was one of the most memorable hits of the year. Sadly, Evanesence recently split and then regrouped and then flopped but this remains the gem within their back catalogue.

88. Troy and Gabriella – Breaking Free
Love it or loathe it, High School Musical was one of the pinnacle points in the Noughties music industry, suddenly the children’s music market became highly profitable and these Disney stars were everywhere. However this anthem for the suppressed remains the biggest and most iconic hit to come from the franchise, having been covered many times and although HSM got really **** after this, the song still makes me want to break into song and cartwheel down the street when I hear it.

87. Alphabeat – Fascination
Swedish body poppers, Alphabeat made their breakthrough with this ridiculously happy, HSM/Same Difference-esque ditty. You might recognise it from the current Coca Cola advert. It reached the #6 post over here and stayed in the Top 40 for nearly three months. Not unlike the aforementioned HSM, they’re marmite, you either loved them or couldn’t stand them. Regardless, it remains their signature song and biggest hit to date.

86. Oasis – Lyla
Noel and Liam didn’t thrive in this decade as much as in the 90’s however they did come up with a few diamonds, this being one. It almost didn’t make the final cut of the album, Noel himself said he ‘didn’t realise how good it was until we played it live’. Well it seems that the public recognised its catchy hook and timeless chorus straight away as it went all the way to #1, their penultimate number one until they disbanded 4 years earlier.

85. Gwen Stefani – Cool
This electro-pop mid-tempo number was released as the fourth single from Gwen’s debut album, ‘Love. Angel. Music. Baby’. It didn’t match the success of its predecessors, but the song, which talks of Gwen’s relationship with ex-boyfriend and fellow No Doubt member, Tony Kanal, was always a personal favourite of mine, with it’s summery melody and chilled out vocals. It follows the New Wave movement which became prominent later on this decade and has a cracking video. Overall, well, it’s pretty cool.

84. Robbie Williams – Rock DJ
The video was voted the 7th most groundbreaking video of all time on MTV and won Robbie a VMA for best special effects however to this day the full video, which sees Rob stripping to his underwear before eventually peeling his skin and flesh and becoming a skeleton, in the hope of impressing the DJ, is rarely played on TV. The song however is still one of his biggest hits and earned him his third solo number one. It’s my favourite Robbie song – though in fairness, it’s also one of the few I can actually tolerate – and is a British Noughties classic.

83. KT Tunstall - Suddenly I See
Scottish pop star KT Tunstall was everywhere in 2005 at the release of her debut album, ‘Eye To The Telescope’. The song gained popularity after it was featured on the ‘Devil Wears Prada’ soundtrack and also on ‘The Hills’ season finale. It’s a breezy, acoustic song about discovering where you’re going in life and what’s important. I love it, it always makes me smile and cheers me up, but it seems to have been forgotten in recent years.

82. Kelis – Trick Me
Rapper and singer Kelis released this mid tempo bopper after her mammoth hit Milkshake and although it was considerably less successful, it has surpassed its predecessor in quality and lyrics. With a funky, low budget video and lazy vocals from Kelis it remains to be one of her biggest and more overshadowed hits.

81. The Fray – How To Save A Life
One of the most overused songs on television, the track has been used on such TV shows as Scrubs, The Hills, One Tree Hill and most notably, Grey’s Anatomy and the finale of Big Brother 8 UK. It’s saddening lyrics and tearful video makes it one of the decade’s most emotional ballads and made it a Top 10 hit worldwide.

like I said, it was a close call, I probably prefer CTS, but felt SOTU was a more memorable hit of theirs.
