Default Rihanna attacks Lady Gaga for 'selling out' with 'ad campaign' music videos

Rihanna may now be in Lady Gaga and Beyoncé's bad books after taking a dig at their music videos and their choice to ‘sell out’ with product placement.

The diva has slated fellow stars for agreeing to lucrative deals with big bucks businesses to feature their products in their music videos.

In an interview with NME magazine, Rihanna, 22, said: I don’t like things to be so commercial. I hate product placement in my videos. Videos should just tell the story of the song.’

This may not be a direct swipe at Lady Gaga and Beyonce, who immersed their Telephone video in product placement, but the two stars’ feathers are likely to be ruffled by these put-downs from the Umbrella singer.

She went on to explain that music videos need to showcase the artist’s own style rather than be a tool of drawing in more money and, when the covers are pulled back, being nothing more than an ‘ad campaign’.

The star did admit that she is sometimes forced to showcase brands in her vids but asserted: ‘It’s never my first choice.’

Rihanna last year launched her Rated R album – the launch was actually assisted by Nokia.

She says that after her first two albums she reached a point in her career where she had to do it her way and not her label’s way.

She admitted: ‘The mystique I have kept has been because I don’t say a lot. There are a lot of rumours about me, every day it’s something new.’

‘I guess by not replying people never know what’s true and they never know what’s not true.’

The full Rihanna interview is available in the new-look NME magazine, out now.

What are your thoughts about product placements in videos?

Not that she was attacking, but if she was she has failed. The products in the music video are not product placements. Nobody was paid for them. They are used to make a commentary on American culture.

Course they are!

You seriously think they didn't pay for those plugs?

lmao

That said, big videos don't come cheap and as long as its done in a subtle(ish) way...meh.

She isnt directly attacking Gaga and Beyonce

Quote:

How nice of them to state that!

in that article she admits she does it herself but doesnt want to.

Quote:

Rihanna last year launched her Rated R album – the launch was actually assisted by Nokia.

Its just an NME ploy to get more people to read their mag by building up hype over Rihanna v Gaga and Beyonce.

I was reading that there is a lot of product placement in her videos. I suppose my meaning of posting this thread was to do with this aspect of things really. I can see music videos becoming one long advertising campaign in the future. If I am correct, I do believe that a product placement ban was only recently lifted on British TV shows. Advertising comes more and more into music videos and TV. Yet another way to rake money in.

They should at least try to make it look less obvious. In the video there is a moment where it pauses on Virgin mobile. If that isn't product placement, I don't know what is.

First of all it wasnt attacking.
Second, she probably meant in general, not that specific video.
Thirdly, she's right.

The media always misleads things.

Hey they have to replace all that money they claim is being lost through piracy somehow, dont they?

What does Rihanna know?

3 Years on and they still refer to her as 'The Umberella Singer'

Just goes to show shes failed epicly now and cant get a good song.
Her new style is horrible, shes a mess and sounds like a man.

Wish she would **** and stop making a fool out of herself.

Take a bow was her last amazing song.
After that she killed it.
