'I contemplated suicide': Jack Tweed speaks about his rape trial as girlfriend Chanelle says she can see a future with him.


Jack Tweed said today he contemplated suicide after being arrested for rape.

Jade Goody's widower, who was cleared of all charges, said he considered ending his life because he feared he'd be branded a rapist forever.

Speaking today on This Morning, he said the only reason he changed his mind was because he couldn't have been that selfish towards his family.

Opening up to presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, Tweed, 22, said the first thing he thought about when he was arrested was that no one would believe him.

He said: 'As soon as you get arrested, that’s the first thing you think. You think "that’s it, my name is branded as a rapist, I’m never going to get out of this".

'I remember my mum coming to visit me and I just wanted to end my life. I thought what’s the point? I don’t wanna be branded as one of them because I’m not. I think it’s disgusting. I just thought there was no point carrying on.'

Tweed was arrested and charged on suspicion of two counts of rape last September after a young woman reported an attack to police after a party at the club promoter's Essex home.

Last week he was cleared of all charges in less then twenty minutes after the trial at Snaresbrook crown court in east London.

And today he said he prayed to his late wife Jade as he waited for the jury to return their verdict.

He said: 'I just went to the toilets and I actually prayed to Jade. And I don’t really do that a lot – I do pray sometimes but I don’t really talk to Jade because I just feel stupid but it was probably the first or second time that I have done it. I just sat there for ten or fifteen minutes in the toilet just praying.'

And although he was cleared, he said he still looks back on that night with regret.

He added: 'I think I should’ve just gone home on my own and shouldn’t have had people back to my house nearly every single night. Obviously I regret it but in my eyes I still didn’t do anything wrong.

'I slept with a girl which is what everyone in the world does, or every boy in the world does. But of course I regret it; I’ve regretted it every day in prison. Obviously I do bring it on a little bit myself, but I don’t have very good luck.'

Tweed said he now hopes to put it all behind him, start afresh and rebuild his life, and spoke of his desire to see Goody's two sons Freddie and Bobbie from her relationship with TV presenter Jeff Brazier, who he grew close to during his time with Jade.

Tweed said: 'I haven’t spoken to Jeff since all this has happened. I wrote him a few letters while I was in prison but I didn’t get a reply from him. Which I don’t blame him to be honest.


'But I spoke to one of Jade’s mates – one of our bridesmaids, and she’s going to speak to Jeff for me as she still sees the boys. So I’m just waiting to hear back from her really. Hopefully.'


Meanwhile, Tweed's girlfriend, reality TV star Chanelle Hayes, 22, said she knew he was innocent all along.

Speaking in an interview with New! magazine, she said she stayed with Tweed the weekend before the trial and said she helped take his mind off it by being 'my normal self'.


She said: 'We had a kiss and a cuddle. And we watched DVDs to take his mind off the case.

'Obviously, he was really nervous, because even though he knew he was innocent, he didn’t know what the jury’s verdict would be.'

Chanelle is six months pregnant with her former Middlesbrough footballer boyfriend Matthew Bates, 23, but said it felt a bit strange starting a relationship with Tweed, who she has been seeing for just over a month after they were introduced by a mutual friend.

However, she quickly added: 'But at the same time, when you’re happy the baby’s happy.'

And she said that she had no concerns about him leaving once the baby is born, saying, 'We might fall out tomorrow, who knows?'

But she said she felt like she could actually see a future with him.

She added: 'We might fall out tomorrow, who knows? If we carry on getting along like we are now, then I couldn’t see any reason why not?'
