Default Question Regarding a Job!

Hey all
Quick question for anyone in-the-know.

Basically, I've been offered a job with a supermarket.
&they gave me the dates for my induction &told me that they require my birth certificate & national insurance card.
Now I have my birth certificate, but I'm rather unsure as to where my N.I. card is atm.. it's definitely at either mine or my parents but we've all been hunting and can't find it.
The company told me they can't give me the job without both documents.
However, according to this site, it states "The card is a useful reminder of your National Insurance number but it is not proof of your identity and you don’t need to have one to start work. It’s your National Insurance number that’s important not the card."

If they REALLY need proof, I have a wage slip from my last job with details on it which I'd have thought would be more useful but apparently they need the card. :|
If they have to turn me down, I've got another job option I could take but I won't start for a while.

Where do I stand on this?

Supermarkets are safe - was this a job in Nigeria where you have to give your bank details?

I think they need the number to insure you under their health plan and pay the correct amount of taxes or something, not as proof of your ID

Yeah but I can give them the number without the card & I've got a wage slip to prove that it works & that it's mine.

I can't see why they're SO insistent on having the card :|

You dont need the card it is only the number you need.

As i think if you cant find your n.i card you cant get another, but you always have access to your number, a card isnt proof of identity so you should be fine without it so long as you have the number.

I suppose it's just company policy, perhaps they've had trouble in the past with this sort of thing. They probably have little leeway on the matter and have to do what the company director says really.

When does the other job commence?

Yes you can find out you NI number
as you can tell them your new Job Must have it

Make sure you do not contact a 2nd Site that charges for it.

Is your NI number
on a old wage slip
take that.

I've long since lost my NI card - can GovDirect not be of help to OP?

Couldn't you ring and tell them you've lost the card but have your number and see what they say?

That's crappy.. I hardly know anyone who knows where their actual card is! I would speak to someone in personnel and explain that you have lost your card but you have your actual number... This should be sufficient to allow them to put you on the payroll and then suggest that if they really need to see the card, you can arrange a replacement..

That's the thing, I explained that I don't know where the card is but I have the number & a wageslip but they still insist on the card. My dad works for Tesco (whom I worked with over Xmas) & they don't have this weird policy.

@ the question about the other job, I don't even know. They're waiting for someone to leave but there's not a definite date yet.

Right, sounds to me like they're being a bit arsy.. Fill out this form :http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/ca5403.pdf
to apply for a new one and let your new employers know that you can give them the number and the new card is on it's way

Hiya Darenn huni, you can use your payslip from a previous job as long as it has your current address on it and your national insurance number. You can also use a P60 or P45 depending on when you left your last job, if it was before 5th April you need to look for a P45 from your previous employer. That shows that you have been earning and paying NIC or Tax through your NINO and they should take that. If you tell them that you lost the card and give any of those along with your passport and/or birth certificate you shouldnt have any problems. Most supermarkets because they are larger organisations will appreciate that things do go missing and you should be fine.

Hope that helps babe.

Just give them the number - they don't need the card. There's no reason why they need the actual card. No reason at all. As it happens, the card cannot prove anything... but the number can tell them anything they needto know. The card's just plastic, whereas the number is history.

****ing bureaucracy.

You don't need your card - just your N.I.N. If they request the card, tell them to sod off because that just means they're being awkward.

You don't need your card, your last payslip from your previous job should be fine.

They just need to see proof of your NI number, everyone loses those stupid cards they send out within the first year lol.

I know everyone is already telling you that you dont need the card, just give them this or that but the facts are they have asked for it, it must be part of their organisational policy. I would suck it up, order the repalcement and let them know it is on the way.

As long as you have the number you should be ok. I always lose that card, ha! You can apply for another but you're only allowed two in your life... My friend's 17 and already on her second, eep...
